I would stick with a C-S that will go to locked in custom settings, we already have a Function button at the front right to the lens mount

I think the next D4/500 or whatever they call it should change the Qual button to a Quick adjustment button of 4 or more preset settings(lets call it C-S for custom settings), that is one thing I miss from shooting canon. I had one for higher shutter speed and for lower shutter speed so I could easy change form freezing a shot to show motion, my third was an high ISO setting that was using for speed skating

I will eventually get to play with one so I'll find out for myself. But since you have one now just tell us what you like/don't like. How it does/doesn't compare to your D300. I think your just afraid your going to like it and so you don't want to go near it :^)

Yes, I am! 8 fps @ 18mp sounds really attractive!

I'm not the one using the camera, so I can't really say anything about usability. However, what I don't like is what no Noik likes—terrible button layout, annoying on-off switch, finger-breaking command dials, etc. The build quality felt a lot like my D300, same weight and rubber covering. However, it didn't fit in my hand like my D300 does. As for the good, I'm afraid to say anything.

*Must think negative...must think negative...must think negative...I think I can......I think I can...I think I can.*

Fine, I admit it: I liked the fact that you had quick access to three saved user-created "modes".

*Bad, alpha, BAD!* Do me a favor and have your wife hit me with a tripod too ;^)

I'd love to work for you! You'd let me use your D700X, right? :^)

From my own experience, one of the lesser-known faults of canon are the flashes plastic hotshoes. I know somebody who destroyed their flash (580EX, if you're wondering) after it got hit by a Basketball. Judging by what I saw, the point of failure was the Plastic Hotshoe. why it is canon feels the need to hold up a $400 flash, with a $.01 piece of plastic is beyond me. But, in canon's defense, they do overall have a system that most people could find more useful, but I don't exactly trust the build of some canon models. Compare the build of a D60, with a Rebel XS. The rebel feels like there is nothing inside of it, and rather flimsy, while the d60 feels more solid. Would I want to drop either??? Probably not. Although I'd expect a d60 to survive a bit better.

The newer Canon Flashes have upgraded to a metal shoe just like Nikon did, I find that I could newer trust my Canon 40D and 580 flash to get the exposure right, special if subject is backlit from an open door or window

I didn't go blind from shooting with Canon, but my eyes sure opened up when seeing what I could do with Nikon gear, just a simple thing that you can still get lenses with aperture ring adjustment. That is how I explain to my Son what happens when adjusting aperture, how do you demonstrate that on a Canon

I chose Nikon at first because two big shooters in my family (my dad and my sister) use Nikon, so it meant lots of free lens borrowing. I've borrowed friends' Canons to give them a try (specifically the 40D and the 5D) and I wouldn't consider starting out with canon unless they overhauled their ergonomics and user interface. Switching is out of the question even if they did. I wouldn't want to lose my investment in lenses and accessories.

That is what really matters is it not. OK I tried Canon for a year and still have the 40D, I simply NO 1 thing and that is I trust my NIKON D300 more that I ever trusted my Canon. When I used my 580 flash on my 40D, I was always having to fight the exposure, with my D300 and SB900 I trust it to get right. When I shoot sports my D300 is simply amassing at maintaining continuous AF, the 40D was newer that great (maybe this new 7D is better, whatever) And last thing, I find from both sales and personal experience that Nikon not only have a better warranty but is also more forgiving in solving issues with camera gear.

Poster: If you only have an older D70s, nothing should stop you from giving Canon a try

If I had to do it all over again, I'd still pick Nikon. I actually use all sorts of different brands but Nikon DSLRs are my preferred weapon. Although if I asked you guys to choose which of my photoaday pictures was taken with a canon, Sony, Fuji, Kodak, Pentax, iphone, Polaroid or Nikon I doubt any of you would pick correctly. OK maybe just the Polaroid but I doubt you could tell me which were taken with high end Nikons or with the D40,D60,D70, etc.

Honestly, had I been given the choice again of picking either Canon or Nikon DSLR, I would probably go with Canon.

Sure the ergonomics suck, but I would adopt to them pretty soon. I hope. All of Canon's lens are already AFS. The prices are a bit wee cheaper too.

Don't get me wrong I love my Nikon d70s but the what if feeling is hunting me till today.

when it comes to compacts, I will always go with Canon rather than Nikon. They are a lot easier to use, everything is where you expect it to be. The menu system is so easy.

Nikon can go suck it wit it's built in projector, they would have to pry my out my Canon from my dead cold hands.

My dad just got his 7D last week. I don't know how well a review I can write as I'm not so keen about using it and I doubt my dad would let me anyway. He'd think I'd wreck it or something (he doesn't really approve of the stuff I do like handholding lenses backwards, using my cameras in the rain, attaching a tripod to the camera and then holding the setup by my SB-400, etc.).

So what does your dad do with the 5D? Paper weight? How'd you get a D300? If he's not using the 5D then sell it and get $$$ for more lenses.

Err—nothing. Takes it out maybe once a month, just to find that the battery's dead. He's more into video. Like I said he only got it because he gave me his D70. I doubt my dad'll sell it. He's never done something like that. Though I would appreciate some money for lenses.

I got my D300 from a few years of saving, some begging, and some false promises ;^) I remember when all I could think about was the D300. I printed the brochure, and would have printed the manual too if Nikon would allow it (good thing the don't—my dad would have killed me!). I watched the digitutor and overlaid my current photos with the 51 point autofocus sensors. I even tried one out at Ritz camera.

Now I do the same thing except with the D3S ;^)

I've never heard a Canut say the 300D or 20D was a great canon camera. But I always hear how great the Nikon D70,D40,D90 etc are and how happy "Noiks" are using them.

I don't think Canon really know were they place the On/Off switch, the switch has been placed all over the place from model to model, I find with showing a Canon I have to kind of have to look for where to turn the camera ON, with any Nikon I just know and do it without even thinking about

Of course, because in heavy handling, you always have a chance to turn it off right?

Having it on the opposite side makes perfect sense!

I brought this up on the canon forum and they were adamant that the Nikon on/off switch was in a "stupid" place. That's why I call them all Canuts! In a loving way of course :^)
