But there is no current Nikon underwater camera, should Nikon make one, should be like the others, Oly, Pana, Pentax or Canon. Or should they up the game and make it tougher, etc

I have a 35 Ti, a very good camera. I think what you're talking about might be the Leica X1. I too wish Nikon would do something at least competitive with the Canon G11.

We would all very much like to see a Nikon P&S camera with larger sensor and top class lens, something like good old Nikon 35 Ti was. Today it should probably have a zoom lens, and if it could go underwater ...
Though I would prefer a bit more sensitive sensor like the one used on D300, D90 and D5000, or better yet FX one from D3/D700. Please ... and under 1000$ ...

I would love to see Nikon release it as a higher end compact. It'll definitely be chunky, but it'll have good image quality, in and out of the water. Maybe put a D3000 sensor into it?

Make it drop proof, call it a Nikonos and I'd like to purchase it.

Anyway in another thread we were wondering if Nikon should make a Digital Nikonos Camera, great idea, but would be very expensive and would newer be a widely sold product, but a very well made waterproof P & S camera could sell very well

We sure sell lots of Waterproof Olympus Cameras and I could see Nikon make one also. Panasonic made one, boring just a copy really and the one from Canon is to big and ugly. So Nikon make the camera tough, sort of like Pelican Case tough, with a very strong seal and door closure. It would be thicker than both the Olympus and Panasonic.

So if you build a camera inside a body looking like a smaller version of the underwater housings that you can get for canons and olympus, it should still be fairly compact and maybe able to go down 30 - 40 meters, compared to 3 - 10 in current cameras
