Niko: I was thinking about body size, I would still like to see a D90 size FX camera, that is a new area for FX cameras, it should be done in a way to cut the cost to the bones. Nikon does not need another D700 size FX(except for the actual D700 replacement)

The sensor could be this new Sony sensor, if it can be used as cheap as Sony is doing it

I'd bet Nikon continues with pro level DX. They've made too big an investment in DX lenses and need the upgrade path for amateurs and beginners. I don't think as many would buy an entry level DX body, if the migration path to the better cameras was all FX, it would also crimp DX lens sales.

I see a continuation of parallel development with both DX and FX surviving for a very long time. For most people the image quality available from DX at 6.0 MP was great and at 12 MP very large reproductions are possible. I agree the MP wars are far from over, but above 12 MP I see significantly diminished returns and additional negative issues too. Digital storage is inexpensive, but a D3x would double your storage requirement and transfer speeds.

The size of the sensor? Or of the camera? The sensor specs are in the first post. The camera size would be similar to the current a700 which is slightly bigger than the D90 and a bit smaller than the D300.

A 14mp D400 perhaps? YES! The D300S could still be sold along side it for all you DX "fanboys" :^)

Hi Niko: any information on the size of this new Sony FF camera. I still wonder at what cost Nikon could make a D90 size FX camera, this would be a low end FX: 3 Fps, 11 focus points, at the most D90 features. I would get one if the cost could be slightly less than the D300s. Also this kind of camera would create demand for some better entry level FX lenses, maybe some of them F4.0

This rumor is starting to pick up steam. A Sony full frame for $1500USD! Slap a 135 f1.8 as an optional "kit" lens and I'm buying one...maybe ;^)

I don't think this is a potential D800 sensor. Sony will supposedly but this in an even lower end camera than the $2000USD 24mp a850. So if Sony puts this in say an a750 camera for $1000-1500USD then Nikon will have too upgrade the D400/D90 to full frame. No choice.

The D90 replacement can take over as a top of the line DX camera. The D300S will stick around for those who need a metal body DX. But I'll take a 14mp "D400" full frame anyday :^) Imagine having the choice of a $1800USD 14mp D400 and a $2900USD 24mp D800? :^)

Oh and don't forget that Nikon use to say that the D1 series was always going to be DX too. Remember they said the DX crop served pros just fine compared to canon's APS-H and FF. That quickly changed too didn't it ;^)

If anything it would be a clue to the next D700, not D300. The D300 will always be APS-C. A full frame camera in a D90 sized body would be nice tho.

The D700 has a 14 bit A/D converter. Though maybe these specs are only quoting 12 bit in the context of high-speed (video??) reading?
