Just maybe the technology will be to use 50 or 100 mpixel sensors and then "bin" the sensors (say 4 pixels into one "bin" to get smaller file sizes with cleaner high ISO?

Maybe there will be an optional setting to not bin at low ISO when the photographer wants tons of resolution?

Sort of like an "adjustable" sensor?

Just like you can control file size now by using different JPEG settings perhaps you will have the option to use different "binning" settings on a huge megapixel sensor?

I gringe now just at the mention of high resolution cameras after dealing with 36mp files since April. Give me 12-18mp files please. This from a guy who waited 4 years for a high resolution landscape camera from Nikon to be released :(

@Eric cropping with certain lenses on the d800 shows lens flaw(older af-d wide angle 2.8s), but with others, like the ones recommended by nikon to attain 'maximal' performance, cropping or viewing at 100% doesnt reveal lens flaw (at least)

my personal experience is with the 105mm 2.8G

I think we are a few years off. The processing power required to bin down a 100mp image to say 16mp and do it at 10fps is not quite there.

How many native mp do we need? It does seem to me that at some point even with all of those pixels, cropping just begins to reveal flaws in the lens, technique etc. I think that we may be at that point with the D800.

Incidently, the pixel pitch of the D3200 when scaled up to FX size gives about a 50mp sensor... (D4X anyone?)

What would it mean to FX and DX sensors if the Nokia pureview technology was adapted for DSLRs? No one has answered that question. I think it could mean FX sensors over 100 mp and DX sensors over 50 mp. Has anyone purchased the phone and taken photos with it? Can anyone discuss native ISO range, IQ, and high ISO IQ? Inquiring minds want to know.

LOL!

Golf, a word of advice for you, there is no shame in saying what's true. You are after all 6 months late.

Oh.. and please do a forum search. This topic has been covered before ;0)

Ok so 3 post...one with not a single follow up and 2 in the hart of a topic that covers DX longevity, counts as a "covered top?" If that is the case among those of us who are "active members" then, my sincere apology, I stand corrected. However, in my book that does not fly. The unit came on sale in the US market on July 8th, 2012...hell Cannon announced the 1DX back in October 2011, but in both cases no one had the ability to buy one over-the-counter until just recently. It was for this reason that I brought the matter to our attention, be it yet again given my new found information (thanks iris chrome...cheers mate) to see if anyone has spend up to $700 for such device.

As for coming out and saying what I think, those of you that have seem the manner in which I conduct myself, know that I do not take "shots fired" at me in a fashion that borders someone being a wisecracker to kindly. Perhaps that was not lamourlamorgue intent, but if it was then...you my dear friends got the underling message.

41mp true, but given the size of a cell phone the sensor must be really small. So, at any reasonable shutter speed the light gathered on a per pixel basis must be quite small.

I think the plan is to use all of those pixels to produce a much smaller image (except perhaps in very bright light)

I also think that the lens won't be able to deliver the IQ needed for a true 41mp image.

Consequently, the true value of all of those pixels may simply be statistics aimed at noise reduction for smaller jpeg images.
