I though the whole thing is: "Pimp." Tell me, if you had 3-4 hot sexy ladies wearing very sexy black & yellow swimsuits you would not pick-up that body and start snapping away? Hell I sure would. I would even ask them to bring a chopper bike (black and yellow no less) to complete the setup. Pump up some boom-shaka-laka-boom rap (you know that song by Wiz Khalif that say "black & yellow...black & yellow...) and before you know you have a crowed around you asking you to take pictures of them.

If you are going to be a "pimp" have "pimp" gear and let the chips fall where they may. Life is to short..so get busssy pimp'n.

Smacks of desperation to me, a need to feel adequate (although a D4 doesn't need anything), attention seeking etc. etc..

Those are a few random thoughts I get (that I can print here), I don't think of it as art, but then I have some unpopular views on what a lot of people call 'art' these days.

Honestly, I can understand the V1/J1 being "pimped" and all. I mean it is a fun camera and all so why not? (anticipating negative/angry V1/J1 comment in 3, 2, 1....)

But a D4? Seriously??! Who're they gonna sell'em to? Chuck'e'Cheeses?

It'll all scratch off when you're using the D4 to hammer nails / tent stakes / a would-be thief's noggin...

I didn't fully appreciate just how good my D4 looks in black until seeing this!

I really don't mind. Whatever sells more Nikon cameras = more R and D for us all.

It *might* be cool if they weren't done by art-school posers. This stuff isn't really art, it's just illustrations. Specifically, it's barfed-on sketches and graphics that hipsters seem to love so much these days.

I find them morbidesque... They look like toy art pieces. I however am guilty of putting a few vinyl stickers on mine (but I am a moto photog)

Like or hate the design, that's what makes it art. I happen to love the idea of personalizing your gear, whether it's camera gear or anything else.

I had to use silver gaffers tape (what these here Americans call "Duct Tape") on one of our now retired bodies a couple of years ago. The wife said it looked bad wrapped round my tummy. LOL!!!

I thought your thread title "Pimped up 'pain' jobs" refered to scurrilous whiplash claims. bjrichus LOL! In answer to the question, I would never do it for cosmetic enhancement, but if I had a ton of equipment like the BBC, I might have my gear painted in 'tasteful' corporate colours.

I have a different thought about it. I don't have any money to do it and I wouldn't even if I did, but I can see people doing it.

Value - If you are a working photog and or you are going to use it to death then value of camera = no object.

Uniqueness - Just like why do people paint their cars or modify anything? To make them stand out. Not my cup of tea or anything I would waste my money on, but I can see someone wanting it to be theirs and possibly their signature paint job.

Theft deterrent - You might have a bit of a hard time selling a stolen brightly painted unique body that is maybe one of a kind? or possibly only one of a handful that exist.

That all being said I saw a lens with the lens coat stuff they make for them and it was camo colored...totally made me not even take a second look at buying it.

It sounds like something fun to do for a kid or for a point and shoot that you know you'll never use for any serious work. Otherwise, no thank you.

painting your kit in bright colours, will certainly devalue it but it also make it less attractive to Burglar Bill

I don't get it on three different levels:

--This would totally defeat what I'm usually trying to do: look normal/inconspicuous
--I'd rather spend the money on gear, or a photo trip
--I wouldn't want to blow up trade-in value

Takeaway: I'm neither rich nor ostentatious.

My thoughts are best described as something like severe nausea.

I have been watching some of the comments on the main blog page about the weird pimped-up paint jobs for cameras and was wondering what the [NR] faithful (not just the blog surfers) think about them?

My view is that if I wanted to look like a fool, I'd go out with a T-shirt that looks like these paint jobs, not screw up the resale value of a perfectly good (well, in the case of the D4 posted today anyway) camera. Who are they trying to impress? Blog owners? Brothas in Da Hood? Can't be photographers - can it?
