Just asking, does ambient temperature change noise characteristics in a digital sensor? I notice that in very hot weather like what we get in Singapore on really sunny afternoons I see much more grain than in say in an AC room at the same ISO. For an example you can see my Singapore Airshow images. Those were shot at ISO 200 and still there is some grain present.

Nah, I worked it out for myself Jonny. People used to call me a sniper and worse but they couldn't argue that they got more money than if I hadn't bid!

Everybody does it now, but it still works as I never pay more than I decided before the bidding rush started. My top on that lens was £240.

I remembering seeing a study that concluded that was the best way to bid on eBay, Andrew. It came out about nine years ago...say, that wasn't you who did that study, was it?

I've used the same method for nine years on eBay - decide how much (top price) I will pay then enter it during the last three seconds. Sometimes I get outbid, sometimes I get outbid before I bid but usually I get it for less than I was prepared to pay. As you said Skinty, Auction fever is to be avoided at all costs!

The buyer would have ended up at £800-£900 for an ex-rental lens that had done a face plant. Bargain - NOT.

I saw a fairly badly damaged 24-70 f2.8 on eBay the other day and I thought about taking a chance and paying up to £200 for it. I estimated repair to be £300-£400 and so I could get the lens I want for £500-£600.

In the end, it went for £510.33 - crazy or what!

That's why I always place my maximum bid on eBay, and then leave it till the end of the auction. Stops me from getting auction fever!

@ tcole1983 Try ISO 3200 on the D5000. Do not worry about noise. Check exposure with a gray card if possible, Then, some trials with using the spot meter. Shoot at 1/250th second at f/4 or try f/5.6 at 1/125th sec. Continuos servo focus. Wait until the action comes toward you...then shoot like crazy.

The issue of noise is IMO less of an issue than photos which are soft. And at 1/60th sec, very few will be much good mainly because the movement is irregular and those little feet are going back and forth. Make certain you have adequate exposure on the subject. A lot of noise results from underexposure and "saving" in post processing.

The good thing is you are out trying and learning.

Edit: I learned that the D7000 does not get a speed bump from the MBD-11. Sad panda. :(

Gosh well I took some shots under the Friday night lights and well I stink :(

So now that I have done it.

300 mm on DX is barely long enough and I was able to get fairly close on the sidelines at the game. I was shooting at ISO 800 which still showed some noise and I really wasn't getting fast enough shutter speeds. I was shooting with my monopod, but I need the better tripod collar for my 300 F4...it will be my next purchase. Out of ~90 pics I got maybe 6 usable...which isn't good.

One of my better shots:

It appears that you can submit photos taken with any camera, even cellphones for this contest. A photographic pro shop is hosting it. I've been in there once and noticed they're weighted to the Leica and Canon side. Nevertheless, two of my coworkers are thinking of submitting entries. They're both Nikon guys as well (D300S and D7000). We'll see.

Something is fishy with this 1000 posts mark, mine was also at 1000 exactly when I logged-in yesterday, too odd to be a coincidence and beside, I remember having a post-count much higher a while back. Sounds like a software glitch. I hope you guys were not using the count to win a contest :>

Perhaps we get slapped with count penalties when we misbehave... or do not login often enough...
