You also can use the 'lead' of a pencil (especially the soft kind), which is basically graphite in a different form. Beware, the stuff conducts electricity, you do not want dusting your sensor or electronic circuits. Use very little, rub it good and clean any excess.

If you want some lubrification, The locksmiths use graphite, it is inert, very effective and dry. Wet stuff collect dust and particles and
you do not want to dammage you coatings.

Hi all,

A wide leather belt is another trick, too, to give additional grip around the lens filter, but the wrenches are the right tool for the right job to have in the box.

If one had old inter tubes - or even knows what those are - one could cut out squares large enough to provide gripe, too.

Some of these tricks are very old, but the wrenches are cheap and designed to do the job easily.

My best,

Mike

I find with thin materials like those of the filter rings etc., the act of gripping them to turn them actually distorts them which makes them grip tighter! The trick (if you don't have those bands which enable grip without squeezing) is to try to turn them with as little grip as you can.

Try to wrap a tick rubber-band to gain better grip. While pushing down filter side down on a rubber surface and twist hard.

I got into trouble screwing a polarized over a thin neutral. Had to return it to the store and this is what they did to unlock it, with lots of sweat. Don't use that combo again, it will lock a the first chance. I returned mine and got a replacement that was OK. Let the shop try it for you if you can, if it locks, it will be their problem.

Oil might be nasty to clean, try liquid diswhasher soap.

Hi,

You should look into filter wrenches.

They are available at camera stores, B&H, and Amazon.

Well, you might try using ice on the filter ring to shrink it....and keep the adapter into which it is screwed warm with your hand. Sometimes works. Or a heating pad on the adapter ring, to expand it slightly, then try to loosen the filter. If somehow it is cross threaded, difficult to do, this may not work. Good luck, and be very very careful not to break the filter. If it is off the camera, and you can clean it well afterward, as a last resort try a small, small drop of one of the light oils like WD-40. But instantly clean the filter well as it could damage the coatings. Do not use any type of silicone or teflon as these are impossible to clean off.
