Anyway, I know that the Sigma 15mm 2.8 isn't too bad if you stop it down, same with the 10mm.

I have a 16mm f2.8 fisheye, and it is actually one of the sharpest lenses in my bag. it creates beautiful images with the d700. It's sharp as a knife stopped down to 2.8, and I find myself using it for its creative distortion all the time.

I would never trust myself with that expensive lens. I was never amazingly good with tools.

Yeah, the plumber tools cut by pressure and rotation, id not feel very comfortable using that.
Perhaps a Dremel at low speed, remember, you're not cutting all the way through with the saw/dremel, only far enough so that you may cut the rest using a utility knife.
Ill order one next week and try this method i reckon cause it caught my interest.

You think, Pete? ;-) That is a really cool modification, and those pictures are fun.

I'd find a plumber with a big pipe cutter instead, though. Something about hacksaw blades that close to the glass makes me shudder. Watch, the pipe cutter method would probably just shatter the front element.

Maybe Nikon should just sell a version without the hood and with a cover that's less of a kludge.

I am going to save for the 10.5mm DX fisheye and when I get a FX camera out comes the hacksaw blade for the FX conversion, did you guys look at the pictures he took with the converted lens, although it properly voids the warranty on the lens

hmmm. . .I still have a weird feeling that the 16mm fisheye will get an update. . .it's 15 years old!! the 10.5 is awesome, but when you have a reinvigorated FX line, esp with the D3s out, I think this will be part of the "prime packages" delivered by Santa Nikon in 2010. . .

I would get the Nikon 10.5mm DX lens and modify it to work on FX, I included a link to how it is done, You will get the ultimate fisheye lens on your FX camera app 200 degree, yes the corners are not covered by the lens but you crop to your liking

You can still use it on DX and get are more normal fisheye lens output

The 10.5 is a great lens. Fast, sharp and fun to play with. Also very, very special purpose.

I use it much less since I bought the 10-24.

it's the FX equivalent to the 10.5mm fisheye. . .it won't phase out anytime soon, Nikon has put WAY too much money behind FX to phase out such an awesome fisheye. . .the 10.5mm DX is actually a smidge wider than the 16mm, but essentially the same, sharp, small, fast prime fisheyes. . .you can find them if you look, check out JR.com, BH, Adorama, ABesofMaine, buydig, etc. . .or pre-order and they'll get it for u. . .

I agree it is pricey for occasional use, but should pay itself off in time. I know its a novelty lens but brides love em (I do wedding photography). I'll wait till October. Thanks for the advice.

Like I said the 16mm fisheye lens is out of stock at BH and Adorama. If you can wait to see what happens in October then wait. If not then buy it when you find it in stock. Or You can always buy it used.

For me it's a pricey lens to have if your only going to use it on occasions. The novelty of having a fisheye wears off quick. An ultra wide angle is more useful.

I already have a 24-70mm, I'm looking for the distortion (fish eye) for unique creative shots.

What I mean is that there is too much distortion with a fish eye lens (obviously). Most photographers would rather use the 14mm f2.8 for wide angle work. Unless your shooting skate boarders and you want that fish eye distortion (which can be replicated with software). If you want a fish eye for extreme panorama shots, you'd be better off using stitching software. I don't see a big need for a replacement when software can get you better results.

Thanks for the welcome. So what do you mean by 14mm? Thats not a fisheye lens right? theres only the 16mm for the FX.

This is a very old lens (last update happened in 1993?) so an update is way over due, but I think Nikon might just let it fade away. It's currently out of stock in a lot of places but the 14mm f/2.8 is still available so...?

Is this lens due for an update? I bought a 70-200mm not too long ago and a couple of months later the VRII came out. I dont want the same thing to happen to me with the 16mm fisheye.
