The moire issue is loudly promulgated by Nikon. It's not an internet rumor. However, many of Nikon's example shots are taken where moire might be a problem -- and it isn't. I've shot medium format for years and have never had a problem with it. But because I haven't had a problem doesn't mean there is no problem.

Yes +1 Mikewhis thats correct its another internet spread "truth" just like all the concern over moire. I knew I wouldn't be concerned with moire issues because the Leica M9 was fine without the anti aliasing filter.

Good post, but worth noting that the D800's resolution is slightly higher (though not that much!) than the best-case scenario for digitally scanning most types of 35mm film stock.

36MP is WAY higher resolution than any scan of any 35mm stock.

I didn't know that the resolution of the D800 was higher than scanned film: I never had decent results scanning film. All I know is full sized prints with the D800 look like they were taken with 35 mm film, only better, because I can play with them in Photoshop first and cheaper than sending out slides to have them enlarged and printed.

Also, I have dynamic range I can work with, and no reciprocity failure. I am not going to be easily convinced that I made a bad choice buying a D800, even with my raggedy old Nikkor lenses. I admit I bought into the lens hype and acquired an AF-S 105 mm Micro-nikkor, and I bought an AF-S 60 mm micro-nikkor for one of my clients to use with his new D800. The 60mm is a spectacular lens. I don't know why Nikon didn't put a gold ring on that one...

At the time I ordered my D800 there was no other option for a full frame DSLR that could use my glass: D700s were NLA. People who say there are too many pixels in the D800 amaze me: I have not yet been inconvenienced in any way by the number of pixels. People who say you really need to be hot stuff with the best glass to take full advantage of the D800 are correct, but that is true of any camera, and was much more of an issue in the days of film. So that is not a reason to not buy the D800.

I shoot Nikon and Mamiya. I have not yet shot my 800e because it stubbornly refuses to arrive ... but that's another thread.
Top end lenses really are needed to get the most out of very large sensors, at least IMO. I have good Nikon glass, but not the absolute best / fastest lenses.

I can tell in one millisecond which shot from x years ago was taken with the D700 and which with the Mamiya 645 AFD / P25 digital back. Some of the difference is due to sensor size, some to pixel size (a topic I haven't broached of late), and some is due to glass. Even in normal size prints, you can see the differences instantaneously, so it's not a matter of pixel peeping.

So the real first question is, what do you need all those pixels for? What will they do for your photography?
Like unto it is the question above, what's available for less $$ that would meet those needs?
Finally, regarding getting the best use from this camera (or any), the more you have, the more is asked of you.

Hmmm....Even Ben Long calls P mode Professional Mode to stress that Pros use it. (He does)

The actual ten reasons not to buy the D800 are simply the next ten less expensive cameras. Once you have eliminated those as suitable candidates should you consider the D800. Which, by the way, is the rationale for considering the D800 before the 5D MkIII.

I'm not sure if the author has actually used a D800, because there is a lot of re-hashed misconceptions about how to take good pictures. For example, just last week I was told by a camera sales guy at Best Buy who insisted he was an expert that I need to buy completely new lenses. Not so! Nikon lenses from back when Pluto was still a planet are amazing.

I find the D800 more like a film camera with variable ISO than any smaller format digital camera. Allow me to add to what d3c states: The number one reason to buy a D800 is that you are used to film and you want a camera with DOF and resolution inherent to film.

He left out the central question: Do you want a FX format camera with the DOF characteristics and resolution inherent within that format?

Ah ... but it is supposed to be funny in an ironic way. If all you do is print pics of your cat, cub scout or little treasure at sizes less than 10x8" you won't even know what DOF is.

One doffs ones cap (if we use correct Queens English), but in photography?

If you even have to think about asking, you don't need a D800. Now THAT'S ironic ;-)

I don't need ten reasons. It is too big, too expensive, not that available when I bought a camera yesterday (another D7000), and the Megapixel count is way to high. D7000 JPEG Fine large on the D7000 comes in at 6.8MB, crops sometimes to about 3MB compared to D90 which seems to be about 6.6MB max on JPEG fine, large, and often somewhat less than 2MB cropped. On the other hand the D400 seems a way off in terms of announcement, production, and actual availability. That quest is what Nikon Rumors is all about, right?

Not really humorous to me. Old jokes repeated too much. Moreover, two errors regarding camera shake and lens. You don't need to have better lens or technique to shoot with D800, unless all you do is pixel peeping.
