This present class for which I need to deliver minidv stuff (aka the D300's 640x426 will be enough) will be over and I'm gonna be planning using a possible D700x for the next class.

Don't worry. I'm very happy with my D300 when it comes to taking pictures, only complaint would be that I can't have a 14mm equivalent and I like FX, but that would be luxury.

If the D700x comes with full hd video with manual control over it, I'll be more than happy. If they don't announce what I want, I'm going to sell my Nikon gear and go with the 5D mk2. I can wait about 4-5 more months for an announcement... I'd like it to be today but I can wait.

I was referring to the 1280x720p HD video from a flip versus the 640x426 you'd get from a jury-rigged D300. If DOF is what you need then get a used D90 or hell even a D5000. Isn't your class going to be over by the time the next "D700" becomes available in the Fall?

Somehow I feel like no matter what Nikon announces on the next "S" model, your still not going to be happy :^(

Or you could always get a Nikon to Canon mount if you decide to go with the 5D. Not sure how that would work, but it would allow you to use the Nikkor 14-24.

Seriously, though, I think the DOF is totally worth it. I recently watched a movie that was shot on film and it was beautiful.

D300 vs Flip HD? Are you kidding?

I just wrote that I need the DOF and the focal length.

To me, these 2 worth more than resolution. For what I have to do now, miniDV resolution is enough, HD would be luxury (luxury that I would enjoy)

I can afford to wait for the next Nikon announcement.

If the D3s or D700s doesn't offer serious video, it's gonna be the 5D mk2 + 16-35 ƒ/2.8...

I wonder if that new cheap weird branded 14mm ƒ/2.8 would perform good on the 5D mk2... I might try that.

Of course I'd prefer the D700s + 14-24 combo.

Are you sure about that output? It doesn't seem right to me. Why not buy a flip HD camcorder for $200 bucks. It will give you way better quality then what you want to jury-rig with the D300. Or just buy the canon 5DmkII already if you are in such a hurry. It's got everything you want NOW. Just put a Nikon sticker over canon and nobody will notice :^)

The output would be 640 x 426, it's far from being HD but I can boost it fit in the 720 x 480 minidv standard without losing much quality.

Ideally I want to work with 1080p in order to stabilize my image in after effect and add some crop & pan and output in 720p.

Until I get my D700x that does 1080p with full manual video controls, I'll work with that low resolution... at least I get to use my wide angle lens (camcorders have like a 40mm wide end, this is ridiculous) and I get the amazing DOF (with my 20mm ƒ/1.8, it's very sexy)

MF is the way to go with video. You want that smooth transition from delicious bokeh to razor blade sharpness.

But back to the main topic,

I'm still looking for a way to record the live view feed from the D300 to a computer with OS X.

The only way I found so far is via live view tethering and screen capture, but the quality of the screen capture is low, the process require 2 softwares (which asks for more resource on the machine) and requires more post production to recrop to the image size and delete the unused screen capture part. These 3 factors makes it a no go (mostly the low quality video part)

I've got an option for winXP that works just enough (sometimes, some weird procedure makes the recorded file corrupted... so you gotta make sure you use the thingny as intended)

As I wrote in some other thread, I was playing with d300s yesterday and also managed to record couple of seconds, and unfortunately the jelly effect is still there. The af works a little bit better than on d90, but still MF is much faster and accurate.

Well, over there it takes about 3 posts to upgrade from one rank to another for the first 10ish ranks lol so you'd be at the D100 or something..

but really here's the structure (that I made myself since admin didn't want to tell me)

The list so far:

0: Beginner
1: Kodak DCS 650
2-4: Canon EOS D30
5-9: Canon EOS D60
10-14: Canon 1000D
15-24: Canon 300D
25-34: Canon 350D
35-49: Canon 400D (progress: 10%)
50-74: Canon 450D
75-99: Canon 500D
100-149: Canon 10D
150-249: Canon 20D
250-499: Canon 30D (progress 33%)
500-?: Canon 40D

750-?: Canon 50D (guess)
1000-?: Canon 60D/7D (guess)
1500-?: Canon 5D or something..

Anyway... it would be fun if this forum got updated.. We really need the reply, quote options.. post count would be nice.. ranks aren't needed tho.

Also, thae ranks on Canon Rumors Forums are given based on quality, that's why they have threads where you can spam and the last post is winning...

and after the 40D comes the 50D.

Hmm this is rather funny.

1) Good idea alpha, I'll see if I can get my hands on one of these as if the footage goes on mini dv, it might works well with that class I'm taking.. could be an option, and I'm pretty sure they have that kind of tool there... however, It would be much easier for me to use the D300 with a windows machine.. I have the possibility to do so, it's just that I'd prefer to do so on mac.

Niko: you do know that I won't give you my lenses right?

Also, I make art videos and I do believe that it's better than junk/family footage

I never did video editing with VHS decks but I did edit porn as a job in the past, that makes your comment quite funny.

For now here's my plan:

Use D300 + winXP with nkvid until StudioTether allows me to record that footage on OS X... all that until Nikon announces the D700x/D700s. That I will or will not buy. The day it gets announced, I either preorder it or order a Canon 5D mark II.
