Correct, it was the one at the 6'o clock position. The only other one is the aperture tab at 3'o clock.

And yeah, I cannot fathom a serious reason for it. Thanks for putting my mind at ease.

Agreed - those mounting lugs help protect the rear element from being scratched if it's put on a hard surface. Probably not such a big deal with a tele lens like this with the rear element recessed so I wouldn't be too fussed.

Well, on mine, it does not appear to do anything except move along into the recess provided in the body. But, what it does, at least my guess, is to allow one to set the lens down on a flat surface without a rear cap, and not hit the rear element nor have the lens fall over. I can see no other function.

Maybe that is how one breaks it off?

You'd have to post a picture of it, I've never seen any lenses with a tab other than the aperture lever.

...but I swear on my life it was a useless tab. But why would they put it there? It is a little metal tab that sticks into the camera body when the lens is mounted, but it doesn't touch anything. No, it's not the aperture tab. This was part of the bayonet assembly and didn't move. I just want my mind put at-ease that it really isn't important.
