This is hitting the Canadian wires as "breaking news" today. E.G.:
http://thechronicleherald.ca/canada/116046-health-canada-recalls-some-nikon-camera-batteries

(dateline is July 11, 3:43 pm.)

Odd.

EDIT: Here's why it's newsworthy: it's because this is a government notice.

I've never used anything except Nikon's original batteries or, sometimes, Sanyo eneloops.

On the other hand, I'm glad to see the matter starting to get sorted out and others finally getting their correct non-recalled batteries.

I got mine a few days ago. And YES, this has got to cost Nikon quite a bit considering quite a few of us had to have two of them shipped and one shipment returned due to them sending out defective replacement batteries. Bottom line, Nikon was quick to act and for that I'm thankful.

I agree that the first notice of a recall should really be from the Manufacturer to the owners of the affected item. If I didn't follow [NR], I wouldn't have known anything about the recall until today.

Funny thing is that Nikon's bad battery potential is nothing compared to the "cheap" knock off batteries people buy that never have any warnings about them. I have seen cameras that have met their end at the end of those contacts.

Good to see Nikon do something about it, even if it is later.

Ok, so almost two weeks have passed since the EN-EL5 has been recalled and Nikon has only just now emailed me a notice of the recall. Granted that I don't own a D800, I do own a D7000 and even though it's been bought over a year ago, there is a chance I might have bought an affected EN-EL5. I'm not trying to bash Nikon and I know there are lots of if's here but I'm just saying I would have liked to see them be more proactive in this recall.

This is the text of the notice Nikon sent me:

SAFETY RECALL NOTICE
Nikon EN-EL15 Rechargeable Lithium-Ion Battery Pack
Our records indicate that you recently purchased a Nikon D7000 camera that was supplied with a Nikon Model EN-EL15 rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack. Nikon Inc. is asking your cooperation in connection with a voluntary recall of certain lot numbers of its Nikon Model EN-EL15 rechargeable lithium-ion battery pack. The battery pack can experience a short circuit causing it to overheat and possibly causing the outside casing to become deformed, posing a potential hazard to consumers. There have only been seven (7) confirmed reports of incidents of the problem worldwide, and while no injuries have taken place, Nikon Inc. has initiated this recall of the affected lot numbers as a reflection of its commitment to safety and product quality.

We are asking that owners of the affected battery pack contact Nikon Inc. to initiate a free product exchange. Your Nikon D7000 is not part of this recall, nor is any other Nikon equipment or Nikon battery pack models.

Ha! I have to laugh. I just got off the phone with Nikon (very helpful and polite). I received a third UPS update on my battery replacement shipment, which was supposed to come today. The notice I received today was that the shipper (nikon) had requested a delivery intercept, which means they aren't going to deliver the package to me. I called Nikon and explained the situation and was told that I was one of many who had been shipped a replacement battery that was on the Recall List.

So apparently quite a few of the bad ones got out. Poor Nikon....they're trying so hard. ;)

They're overnighting me a battery, which I should have tomorrow.

@looon

Check out Thom Hogan latest entry (May 1st). Someone had emailed him about receiving an "E" replacement battery (was that you?). Then Thom himself also received an "E" battery so he's looking to replace it too. At the very least, you'll probably hear it first from Thom before Nikon calls you back.

UPS is supposed to deliver my replacement battery tomorrow. Fingers crossed I won't have @looon's problem. :/

After learning of the recall I went to Best Buy and they happened to have three batteries on their shelves, all of which were NOT on the recall list (2011 battery production D and B). Although I was willing to pay to have a second battery, they told me they wouldn't be willing to swap my recalled battery for a new one. Strange since they're a Nikon dealer. No biggie I guess. At least they had a few good ones in stock. We'll see tomorrow if UPS delivers my replacement/swap.

I picked up my new D7000 last Friday, unpacked it in the shop to find mine was an 'f' but Nikon said don't worry there are zero cases of damage to cameras in the field, it is only precautionary so I could carry on using the recall battery until the new one arrives.

The shop people didn't know a freaking thing about the problem and thanked me for bringing it to their attention. They had zero stock of batteries BTW.

Arrrrgh!!! The UPS guy just stopped by to swap out my recall battery. After he left I checked my "new" replacement EN-EL15 battery and the 9th digit is E!!!!! Plugged the number into Nikon's recall form and sure enough it came back that it too is under the recall. Called Nikon and now I have to wait for them to process my "Case", someone will get back to me in 3 days because this has never happened before and now we need a new procedure because we can't function without officially sanctioned written guidelines. Just send me a freaking battery that isn't gonna blow up PLEASE!!!!

From the advisory:

If you have an EN-EL15 battery pack with the 9th digit of the 14 digit lot number with either the letter E or F, you should immediately stop using it and remove the battery pack from the battery compartment. EN-EL15 battery packs with which the 9th digit is an A, B, C, D, G or any subsequent letter in the alphabet are not affected and not subject to this recall.

If the lot number of your EN-EL15 battery pack does not indicate as determined above to be in lot E or F, your EN-EL15 battery pack is not subject to this recall. No other Nikon battery packs are involved in this recall. Nikon’s digital SLR D800, D800E, D7000 cameras and Nikon 1 V1 advanced camera with interchangeable lens as well as any other Nikon cameras are also not subject to this recall.
