Shucks, my Best Buy is alive and well.... the SB-910 was about $585. Incidentally, a lady was returning her SB-900 which had died... and had the "overheating, turn off" problem....another thread. But the guys at best Buy were very nice and had a D7000 in stock at regular price. And a cute little thing they called a D3100. Might fit in one's pocket almost.

Actually, I am happy the store is doing enough to stay afloat.

HI Skintbrit,
I am extremely sorry for the fact that I misunderstood your comment. My sincere apologies. You are absolutely right. Who care even if it is an open box. My understanding is that display units of flashes are not as mishandled by customers as the display camera and lenses. Moreover, they are more sturdier than camera and lens which are very sensitive to dirt and handling.

My friend, I dont think anywhere you are getting SB 910 for less than 500 bucks from any established online or brick and mortar stores. I was just sharing my experience. If you dont think $100 difference on a flash unit is not significant, don't worry abt it. Thx

Hi kvh, you misunderstood my comment. I was trying to say that at such a good price as the one you found ( you're right no one sells them so cheaply) that it didn't matter if it was an "open box" item, I'd have bought it anyway!

@SkintBrit: Best Buy aren't exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer when it comes to retailing. Up here in Canada, there are spoons that are sharper.

Here's an example: Best Buy bought out a Canadian competitor, "Future Shop". Rather than re-brand Future Shop as Best Buy, they decided to operate the chain separately. Within the last 24 months, Best Buy has come in to my metropiltan area and opened two new Best Buy stores down the street from their Future Shop stores. The two chains have very similar websites and compete against each other as well as compete against the wider world.

Here's another: Canadians shopping online at Best Buy can only shop at the Canadian ".ca" version of the website. They are barred from shopping at the US version. Selection is poor. Checking just now, the only Nikon bodies available as body-only are the D7000 and D300s. They offer only five kits: D7000 + 18-105 mm; D3100 with 18-55mm; D3100 with 18-55mm and 55-200mm; two versions of D5100 with 18-55mm (one with a bag; the other with a memory card). The most expensive prime offered is the 60mm Micro @ $739, something of a niche product with all the great 50mm and 85mm glass available. So, poor selection.

*shrug* It's their business.

kvh said:
Yesterday I walked in the got a Nikon SB910 for 385 bucks. I initially thought it was an open box item.

At that price who cares? Tell me, why do the closing stores not give their stock to the open ones? Is Best Buy in the states a franchise?
