No Tao, it isn't about me at all. Didn't even realize my name gets "on top" and don't even know what that means. All I see listed on the main page is the last poster, not the first. You can substitute your name for mine for all I care.

The focus of this thread is the new sensor. I think 24 mp at the bottom of the DX line is a "big deal" and signals changes to come. Also, I expect plenty of D3200 sample shots will be surfacing, some already have. The ones I have seen look amazing. This is a place to post links to them and discuss what we know or learn about this sensor and what it may imply for other models up the chain. I don't know why it is wrong to do that.

It is all about the new sensor, that's all. No other such thread exists. If I am wrong Admin can close this one.

donaldejose how about waiting on opening a thread until you can actually buy one? Is this like the 3rd one you have done? Like you name at the top I see ;)

Your first post is all over the board and has little to do with the D3200.

So what is the focus of this thread? The D3200 or the D400? FX sensors?

Everything you asked is in other threads or you have brought them up in others as well.

Perhaps Nikon will consider the D400 to be the "speed demon" of the DX line (like the D4 or D3s) and therefore not use a higher megapixel sensor in order to keep processing time down for faster fps. We will see.

for sure the sensor of the 3200 is not from sony,
the number of bits of quantification is not the same as the sensor of sony

donaldejose said:
Nikon will put a better sensor than this one in the D400 and D7200. I would speculate 10 to 20% more megapixels?

Sensor quality little to do with the amount of pixels. I´m guessing that there will be 10 to 30% LESS pixels on the D400 sensor. I´m wishing for a 16mp sensor though, to be able to get cleaner photos on high ISOs.

>> That would take us to the range of 27 to 30 megapixels which seems unheard of for a DX size sensor. Can it be done? <<

Why not ? A Nikon 1 sensors surface is 116mm2 , an APS-C sensors surface is 370.5mm2 so that is 3.19 x the size of the first one.. There is 10.1mp on a nikon 1 sensor, times 3.19 = 32mp ...

Now calculate, based on the nikon 1 sensor density, the theoretical mp for a 35mm fullframe sensor which has a surface of 864mm2 .... :-) ( this also shows the real achievement of the Nikon 1 sensor... ;) )

Remember, they use the Sony line of sensors in this line, so they can't just add 3Mpix here and there, it depends on what Sony makes. If you want to look at the low-light performance, you can get some inkling of that from the Sony Alpha 65 and 77 images.

Would those who purchase a D3200 please comment upon the sensor and post some low light full size files for comparison?

While Nikon's sample images seem spectacular they are all shot at ISO 100 and 200. How does it perform at ISO 800 and 3200, for example?

I will speculate upon two things:

First, a 24 mp DX sensor may foreshadow a 48mp or 50mp D4x in a few years. Use the same technology and apply it to FX size sensor.

Second, Nikon will put a better sensor than this one in the D400 and D7200. I would speculate 10 to 20% more megapixels? That would take us to the range of 27 to 30 megapixels which seems unheard of for a DX size sensor. Can it be done? Remember the D700 was 12 megapixels and the D7000 is 16 megapixels. We would have thought back then that you cannot put more megapixels on a DX sensor then you put on an FX sensor and get decent results. Maybe you can today. Maybe the D4 can be 16mp and the D400 can be 27 or 30 mp. Maybe the D4x can be 48mp or 50mp. Maybe our pixel-performance paradigm will need to shift.
