Looks like Nikon is now learning of this issue. See this excellent technical 'white paper' about the problem at this webpage: http://www.falklumo.com/lumolabs/articles/D800Focus/OuterSensors.html
Although the paper gets very technical, the last paragraph '4. Conclusion' best describes the potential extent of this issue. In the 'breaking news' paragraph in paragraph 4, there is a link to a "Benkoop" post that has good photo examples of the problem before and after an adjustment by a Nikon technician. I will now test my D800 for this issue.

hello
here is Korea and I am Korean.

I've checked five D800 bodies and it has same problem.
left af point has problem

if you want see , use 85mm/f1.4/6m is best to check or 50mm/f1.4/3m is also good.

http://www.slrclub.com/bbs/vx2.php?id=newproduct_nikon&no=46871

first picture, middle point shot(body adjustment 0)

second picture, left point shot(body adjustment 0)

arrow means depth!

Nikon Korea says it's not defective product and NO one-to-one exchange.
And no official position yet.

check your body!
