I know, I know, but my lenses really suck. My best lenses are the 18-70 and the 50mm ƒ/1.2.

After that, I've got two crappy sigma lenses that my dad gave me along with his D70 a year and a half ago.

alphanikonrex, sometimes we just have to go against the common advice and way of doing things and buy for what we know we would use. I really need to get one or two more lenses. But my next lenses are not a reality until I get a new job. Therefore, I'm in the selling one body to get another fix. I am glad that I got the two lenses I could (went broke doing it) but for now I know what I can do if I know how to take advantage of the technology.

Yah, I'm crazy about my D300 too. And my D70.

I always think to myself, "What if I got a lens instead of my D300?" I always tell myself I should have gotten the lens, and I wasted nearly $2K, but then I realize that I've taken some great photos with my D300. What if I had gotten a lens instead? Would I have taken those shots with my D70? Would I have been able to?

I doubt it. One picture I took with my D300 won 3rd place in a local competition. I don't think I would have taken it with my D70. To begin with, I used a wideangle lens for the shot, and if I had gotten a new lens it probably would have been telephoto, and that's what I would have had stuck to my camera.

I'm glad I made a bad investment.

I know who you guys feel about your D70/D70s. I know lots of very happy D70 owners. It's one of those that Nikon really did right for it's users. It's the reason why it was included in my Nikon's best post a while ago along with the D40 and D300. These three have a popularity like no other Nikons. I feel the same way about my D300. I may get newer models as they come out if I want them but I will always keep my original D300. Like you guys, this camera is what really defines me, people know me as the D300 guy as I am the only one in my photo circle who has one. It's also the camera I used to really help me improve my technique and take advantage of the cool features (remember, I love features and tweaks because I like the challenge of learning them).

"I was easing into digital and actually went into the store with the intent to purchase a Canon Rebel XT. I picked up the Canon.. put it down and tried the Nikon.. picked up the Canon one more time simply because I couldn't believe the very cheap feel and then purchased the Nikon. I read about the newer Canons but never considered not buying the D300s, which I'm happy to report that I'm very pleased with. Oh, and someone tried to compare his 50D to my D300s a couple days ago as he looked and touched with envy"

HeuMAN, your experience sounds very much like mine. Being a birder, I was looking into Canon originally as most birders and wildlife shooters use them. I was going for entry level and looked at the Rebel XTi just like you. I had been playing with them for a while. Then my roommate got his first DSLR...a D40. He let me play with it a bit and after comparing it to the Rebel (which was over 200 more at the time), I knew the D40 was by far the better buy.

Since then, I've always looked at Canon as an alternate but always came back to Nikon. As recently as a few months ago as anyone on here can tell you, I almost got a 40D because Canon has a lens I want. Oh well, I will just wait and deal.

Nikon has better technological specs (I'm into electronics I look at this stuff because I can learn how to aplly them). The Expeed processor is much better than Canon's digi...whatever the hell it's called. Canon also has nothing like the Multi-Cam3500. Picture controls in the new gen Nikons also are just another tool Nikon gives that are more powerful than what Canon offers. Then there's Capture NX/NX2. Nuff said ;)

Hello there:
My name is Joseph, I am an orthodontist envolved in digital photography since ten years ago, I own a Nikon D70s, a legendary D80 and aiming to get a new D90 gear... I belong to the Nikonians web group and I have to tell you that I have never seen such a finesse post like the one morty11 added 1 week ago about the poorly job that a Nikon camera does in the woods by itself... way to go! Personally, I love my D80, it had never failed once yet. Best regards... ORTHOZAC

@NikoDoby: Me too! I love my D70! After all, it's the camera that made me who I am.

It's such a great camera—in fact in some ways better than the D80 and D90! Better flash sync, 1/8000 top shutter speed, and a 1005 pixel RGB sensor. I had always taken these features for granted, and was very surprised when I realized the D80 and D90 lacked them.

I wish that they would update their line up a lot quicker to the AFS version. (so I can snatch up cheaper the AFD versions). But seriously I want to see update primes sooner than later. And PLEASE don't do this supply and demand crap. I am tired of waiting months to finally get my new camera or lens. All the prices are highly inflated. Give me a break.

Nikon has had a lot of "first" complishments lately.

First video capable DSLR, D90
First camera with a projector, S1000pj
First $8,000 dollar 24megapixel DSLR, D3X :^)
First 51 point autofocus
First 12800 and 25600 ISO
First with 921,000 dot LCD screen
First to get my money

Innovation? I don't really think that Nikon can be thought of as particularly innovative. I would be more likely to call them somewhat conservative. I think this leads to some good, well thought out products that are reliable, handle and work very well.

As for offering something for advanced shooters I think that for overall handling and image quality the D300 is tough to beat. If you have a lot of old Nikon glass or you (or your ego) need full frame than the D700 is a great bet. Neither camera may win the megapixel race, but the image quality (esp at high ISO) is there.

As far as financial stuff goes, in DSLR sales Nikon is one of three companies to post a market share gain, being beaten out only by Sony.

Room for improvement, yes there is, but I think overall Nikon has a solid lineup that provides something that would suite the needs of many different photographers.

If I were king, I would love a camera body with the handling, controls, and basic feature set of a D300 in a D60 weight/size package along with a handful of compact, lightweight lenses to match, but nobody is doing that right now. (Although Olympus keeps inching closer.)

Bottom line is, if you don't like what Nikon has to offer, go buy something else. There are plenty of companies who would love to have your business. You seem incredibly upset (maybe that is the all caps posting.) It's just a camera after all.
