I have the two problems msmoto referred to: 1. being logged out (on Chrome) on PAD, log in then showed the first page, go to the last page logged out. 2 fallen and can't get up at times! and technologically challenged as well--I am just a year behind you.

There's a bug on the start page where it lists the different Forums. The number of topics in the list is often wrong, including one forum (Nikon MX) which is listed as having -1 topics!

I don't know if this is down to the new version or if it has always been there.

When I reply to a PM message I get an email saying I received a message from Pierre.

When I receive a message from someone else, no email notifies me.

Also If I do not log-off for a couple of days, I am asked to log-on but I cannot. It takes quite a bit of efforts to get back-in. Last time I succeeded by loggin-in and logging-off from my IPhone + a couple of retry on my laptop and a 15 minutes wait.

When I log-on say on the latest PAD page, I get kicked on the first page upon success, the when I go to the last page I am showned as logged-off but if I do a refresh, it show me logged-in.

I am running Windows 7 ultimate an Internet Explorer 9.

Hope it can help.

@msmoto

Apologies but I didn't mean you. It was just a general suggestion for Peter.

@spray

Maybe the timing of my comment was bad but I've been holding that thought in me for a while. I did not intend it as a sneaky response to the other thread. Everything I had to say was said there.

I don't know when was the last time anyone here checked the comments in the main blog but they can get pretty rancid and the amount of vitriol they spew can be very off-putting.

Anyway, it's just a suggestion. If it can be implemented with this forum software then I don't see a reason why it should't. I think it's a very good way for the community to self moderate itself.

Yup, on some threads it is just best to move on... and it is always possible one of us says something another interprets in a manner we could not anticipate... And, as you say, we are not about determining the fate of the Earth.... just kinda havin' fun with pictures...

OK, maybe I need to explain... at age 70, one can use the "fallen and can't get up" meaning basically, I was not able to figure out the problem and maybe hollered "wolf" too soon. This was a self deprecating comment. Not meant to be "rank" but simply poking fun at myself and my lack of technical skills with the computer stuff.

If a comment gets enough of these negative "votes", it gets made into a semi-visible one line heading, so you cant see it without clicking on it, and if it gets more (these levels are usually selectable by the admin), then it goes away.

I am a moderator on a forum that uses this feature (not photo related), and it does work, but the software is totally different from here and would not be an easy migration if our staff here chose it. There is a kind of forum system used on the Egadget blog (just add .com to that name) and it also works, but to use it is expensive, corporate, blah...

Just a suggestion but is it possible to implement functionality to down rank comments into oblivion? I think it could clean up the comments a little bit specially in the main blog.

+1,000,000

This is possible on some other forum software (like that used on Engadget for example), but I don't know if it is here? For sure, the level of adolescent language and approach used by some on the main blog especially is a little bit out of hand. Perhaps the ability to generate a new user name to post under with no verification (and able to post using a fake email address) is no longer a good way to go?

OK, in case this happens to someone else.... I was logged in on page 1. At the bottom, I found a "REPLY" link, so clicked on this and amazing as it may seem.... not only opened up a reply box, but took me to the current page.

I must have been wrong when I was yelling, "I have fallen and can't get up."

Still do nat have a clue what F5 does.....

Sounds to me like you were logged in but then the system logged you out (not sure if this is a problem or intended) so when you wanted to post (reply), you were automatically transferred to the log-in dialogue BUT when you logged back in (and this happens to me too), you were taken to the first page of the thread you were trying to post in not the last (where you were).

Happens to me too.

F5 simply asks for a fresh copy of the page as opposed to a refresh. It is possible for you to go round in circles trying to post/logging in/being unable to post/logging in again add infinitum until you F5 - at least that is my experience with this new software.

HTH msmoto.

@iris chrome - in somebodies opinion all comments are worthy of that and no doubt it would stop the forum dead in it's tracks. People just have to remember there are thousands of others viewing on here too so not get all their demons out on here as it devalues the reputation of this place - just live and let live.

People always use +1 when they agree so why not use -1 if you don't!

msmoto, to get "f5" on the mac you actually need fn-F5

Well, nothing works. I am logged in, everything works until I go to PAD. Then it gives me Day 1. I click on the latest day and it logs me out, asks me to log in. So, I log in, and back to page 1. Then to the current page and once again, I am logged out, and asked to log in to post. This even when I have checked remember me. It does remember my name and password, but unfortunately keeps bumping me out.

Could his be something as a result of the timing of posts to PAD? Possibly within a 24 hour period. I post only one per day, but sometimes these are early in the morning, at other times later in the day.

And, what actually does F5 do?

Maybe an issue, but on Safari, Mac 10.7.3 I have all of a sudden started having trouble with PAD and staying logged in. Was OK this morning, now it wants to log me out after I log in and go to the current page. And if I am on the current page and log in, it takes me to page 1. I will reset Safari if need be, see if there is an issue on my end.

Firefox 11.0 works fine.

I am on a PC using IE 9. On some forum topics, when I click to the most recent page of postings, it shows me a logged off. When I log back on it redirects me to the first page of the posted topic. When I click the last page I find again I am logged off. This effectively prevents me from commenting on some posts. :( Obviously I was successful on this topic so the problem is apparently intermittent?

I'd say whatever you (Admin) did, it solved most of the problem. I'm no longer thrown off-log when I go to another website or close Mozilla. Anytime I return to NR , I am automatically logged in.

However, if I log myself out, then the only way back in is by F5.

I know refreshing the page and F5'ing is not the same. I've read somewhere that F5 gives you the very latest version of the page where as refreshing may be showing it with a time lag ( don't ask me why/how) . Maybe the "log in" command is also staying some what limited in that manner.

You're not doing anything wrong. This is also another effect of the same problem jonnyapple is describing. And you're right it doesn't always happen. It's been a long time since it happened to me too but I haven't been as active here lately as I used to be so who knows.

Btw Peter, I've been having that same problem ever since I remember having an account here. It's not unique to the new version of the forum.
