Wow, looks like it would do good video.

But then I don't give a rat's ass about video, so it really doesn't matter to me.

Hey... Leave my rear end out of this... LOL!

Video... Simply a fad. Reminds me of that famous Bill Gates remark along the lines of "Who needs more than 640K in a computer?" ... and now, this here PC has 8Gb of RAM in it. [SIGH].

As in the D4 doesn't offer 1080p at 60fps (everybody thought that was going to be a given) it has no 25fps either... Not too much of a cripple but something to note...

As a non-video user (so far) - can you explain how they are 'crippled' please?

... It will still be compared to other Dslr's. It has the ergonomics of one and still has all the features of one. I could care less at who it is "aimed" at, the target market and the actual one may be different. If anything this seems just like another "class" of DSLR namely "true vdslr". Cameras like the D800 and Leica S2 are creating a bridge between Medium format and 35mm. This is doing the same with pro video...

How are Nikon's video controls far behind canon anyway? They seem to only have a cripple in the firmware dpt.

TaoTeJared said:
This shouldn't even be compared to DSLRs even if it looks like one. These are cinematography units not intended to be a still camera. (Still will be a hit with some.) I'm not sure if Nikon wants to go that far into video though.

Convergence, divergence, or two separate concurrent video systems will be the question for the path video on DSLRs will go. Will they all go to 4k? Will 4k cause a break off of video and not be in DSLRs as a focus? Will there now be D4v cams and 1080p cams?

Interesting random run-in I had a couple of weeks ago shooting Sandhill cranes: One of the other people there was a guy from PBS filming the cranes. He was using a Panasonic GH2 which for some reason caught me off guard (as I don't do video yet and all the hype of FX, DX sensors and low light use.) Got talking to him and he said he has tried all of the DSLRs, RED and various dedicated video systems and he said GH2 to him handled video leagues better then them all for his purpose. Much of his reason was the the identical framing of those to the old film systems, AF performance and the 2x crop where he could get 1500mm and even 3000mm lens equiv. Considering the rig setup and everything else, I would have appeared he certainly could afford anything he wanted to use.

Just got me thinking that just because something sounds better, it doesn't mean its better for a certain use. I thought it was a nice re-grounding reminder.

That's not all that surprising, the dedicated Panasonic m4/3 video camera is good enough for the BBC for their Planet Earth stuff.

It's simply a different market, at which Nikon is playing at the moment, so saying that canon released a video camera (this is no DSLR, even if it looks like one) is same as saying, "look Suzuki released a hot new motorbike"!

Who cares? And in 3 years time, when every high end dslr shoots 4k, none would care who came up with it first.

So, power to them, but this is competing with RED, not Nikon.

I think the 1D C is mostly about keeping pro video shooters in the Canon camp. This thing is going to have to go head to head against the RED cameras and plenty of others in the same price ball park, but probably more functional.

I don't think Canon expects to sell many of these, but rather wants to re-assure people that it is intent on winning the Video wars. This is exactly the move Nikon tried (and failed) with the D3X where it wanted to send a signal that it was committed to picture quality.

One can only guess that this 1D C is one of the driving causes behind the 1D X being delayed till June (due to farther splitting production in their plants they cannot keep pace with pre-orders).

At the risk of being dragged out in front of a firing squad, I have to hand it to Cannon.

They have always done innovative things with DSLR video and releasing a 4k camera is another example.

I know very little of the video industry but I've read in a few places how 'shooting in 4k' is hot (while perhaps impractical at this point).

Canon's made a good play to be the leader in DSLR 4k, for at least the 3 years (or so) it will take for the D4 refresh.

Will the market turn away from the cost savings of a D4 and 1080p en mass? Hellz no! But some will use it as a competitive edge and that means Cannon wins the day, for now.

The H in Nikon speak = speed (see D1H, D2H), and S= updated version (D2Hs, D2Xs, D3s). D4X would be more appropriate for something to go head to head against the 1D C. In any case, Nikon's video controls still lag behind Canon and they would be better off fixing the 1080p stuff before going after Hollywood video shooters (which based on the price is the clear target of the 1D C and cinema lenses).

1 thing that will drive everybody to the nikon D4 is the $15,000 tag. I personally feel that they are doing what Nikon did with the D3x and what Sigma did with the sd1. If you remember, everybody went to the crippled 5Dmk2 for resolution/good price. Also why do you need to pay $15000 for a headphone jack when the $6000 D4 has one? The crop mode and wireless control also are bonuses canon yet has to offer. Nikon would be smart to make a D4h or D4s next year with all of this at around $8000-$10000
