I already have the 14-24mm and no fx body (save film) and it works wonders on my D90/D7000/etc... The grips I use help balance it well whereas without it is a tad front heavy (but still comfortable). I absolutely love mine and look forward to many years of use from it... Sharp as a tack too (sharper than the canon 70-200mm f2.8 L USM2 at f/4)... Most people who say don't mix fx with Dx have never tried it...

Cropped image will never look the same! yes, you still have enough megapixels to print big if you crop from 36 to 18 but the perspective and look of the image is not the same. There is no way to get around the fact that closeuptele, closeupmacro, closeupwide and landscape have different look and you can't crop a closeup from landscape. well, you can but the result has no feeling or idea to support it.

Wataru said:
With the d800, you might want to think about using primes. A 24mm prime can "zoom" to 36 mm, a 35 mm prime to 52, and a 50 to 75. Actually wel beyond, because of the amazing crop capability. Just a thought. I've been printing D800 shots today, and I realize I really don't need a zoom. Too bad I have them already and only MF primes...

This was a discussion on another Nikon forum regarding the D800. It's really something to think about...for example, if you have a 50mm f/1.4 already with a D800, do you really need the 85mm f/1.4 as well? DOF would likely be different but probably negligible, and from what I'm reading about the BLUR filter in Photoshop CS6 the creamy bokeh can now be simulated. Nikon just might be cutting in on their own lens sales with this camera, not to mention the fact that Tokina and Sigma are releasing increasingly better glass.

Regarding the subject, the 14-24mm is one of Nikons most beloved lenses. I couldn't afford it so I bought the Rokinon 14mm f/2.8 prime since it can also be used on FF if I ever upgrade. I like it alot but it doesn't live on my camera, hence the reason I didn't spend 2 grand on the Nik 14-24. Since learning how to use it I've never wished it had VR, even for shots at ~ 1/20 sec so I can't imagine Nikon "really" seeing it necessary to but VR in their 14-24. The 24-70mm with VR would be heavier and more expensive.

@Squimish - You a mod? Either way, that was certainly a helpful reply... You must be in PR. The search function here, well, sucks for lack of a better word compared to other boards I have been on. It doesn't group the results and there is no way (I have found) to narrow by date. More often that not it gives results on the top that are over 2 years old.

@IceAgeScrat, Bienvenue à NR! Ignore the self righteous few.

If you are not going to get the camera yet, I would wait. Then, if they do update the lenses you can get a killer deal on some almost new "old model 14-24 & 24-70" lenses.

Later,
Jeff

Hi all,

New to the forums so please excuse me if my queries are in any way dumb!

I enjoy photography as a hobby, I currently own a D90 with an eye to go to the D800 later in the year, however in the mean time since I already have the 70-200 vrII I am looking at the 14-24 and 24-70 lenses as well, but as they have been on the market for around 5 years I am curious to know whether we can expect updated versions of these lenses any time soon or should I just go with the ones on the market now? Just don't want to buy these two then Nikon releases new ones shortly afterwards, what are peoples opinions on this?

Hope the above makes sense and thanks for any expert advice,
John

They are excellent designs, both on the Nikon d800E recommendation list. This never really been discussed, but it doesn't matter, because Nikon is VERY unlikely to replace these any soon.

The search option for the forum should give you the results you're looking for. These lenses have been discussed at great length and Im sure that you can find your answer.
