Something to bear in mind. the D7000 is going to be better at high ISO values

I cant help notice skate boarders seem to like playing in the late evening, when the light is fading

Personally, dont think we are going to see a D400 ( but as ever I could be wrong )

the D300s was aimed at professionals and most pros have/ are switching to FX

Maybe at Age 16, the new D3200 is good. Then a kit lens, 18-105mm. This is affordable, will allow shooting a lot of venues, and for a year is a super camera for someone 16 years old. I think I was maybe 17 or 18 before I got my Minolta SR-3, also a great camera in its day. Did not have a NIKON until in my 20's....

The bottom line is that with a D3200 and the 18-105mm, you will be able to shoot anything seen on this forum. The wide angles, telephotos will not be as extreme, but with some care all the other factors, models, venues, technical aspects of the shooting, post processing can be done as well.

Your profile doesn't say where you're from so this may not help but there is only £100 difference between prices of D7000 and D300s in the UK at the moment.

I think it all depends on what you are shooting, but you will like either. I have a d300 (not s) and im an amatuer, and love it. I dont need the more MP, I love the AF, but I wouldnt mind the better stops of the d7000.

EDIT: I just re-read your post. Because of what you described, i think id go for the d300s (the skateboarding... better AF might help) Assuming money isnt the object.

If you're a keen amateur, go for the D7000 - you'll love it.

If you're a professional (or have serious aspirations to become one)... I'd say hold back to see what happens with the D300s and its likely replacement.

The D300s is due for an update this year - I would wait for the D400 or just pass on the D300.

I wouldn't advise on FX unless you already have FX lenses. If you only have DX only lenses, your cost increases significantly unless you don't mind staying on a few lenses.

I would say just get the D7000 and get shots you never would have gotten if you didn't have a camera at all.

The D300s has better build quality and beefier autofocus and burst rate, but I am thoroughly happy with my D7000 for the better bits inside it. If you are considering a D300s though, I think at this point you could start to consider a used D700. I think we will see many of those coming up for sale used for around what you might spend on a new D300s. If you are shooting plenty of landscapes and cityscapes though, maybe the D7000 is the better option, for its huge dynamic range. Put some good glass in front of it and it will resolve all you want it to!

Welcome to NRF

First off I am new to NR and I have been lurking around lately and love it but my question is.

I am planning on buying a new camera at the begging of this summer. From this point I am assuming nikon isn't going to be releasing any DX cameras until next fall or so. I have brought my self down to 2 DSLR's, d7000 and d300s, I know the newer technology of the d7000, but with the d300s being the flagship DX body it is making it a tough decision on which one to buy. I like the video features but that isn't a huge deal to me so I don't mind the lesser quality of the d300s. I have used them both and like them both equally but love the feel of the d300s more. So I am looking for some help on which would be best for me. I shoot pictures of skateboaring with my friends, city, and nature. So which would be the one for me?

Also if you think if my prediction is wrong about a d400 please inform me.
