The old is new again :-) I used to make lots of these a long time ago :-) really not hard at all.. I was really poor and neccesity is the mother of invention! just take the filter off the lens and use it as a template. mark off circles using the filter on a piece of black paper then cut the circle out just a bit smaller then the template marked. You should now be able to jam/press the paper disk into the front of the filter and the threads should hold it in place. I usually leave a small tab on the side of the disk so that its easy to remove when you want to take it off.

now the fun part. with the disk you can fold it in half and cut the shape of a heart in the center with scissors. You can also fold it in quarter and cut star shapes or other weird shapes. To use just press the cut disks into the front of the filter and you good to go. To remove just pull on the tab an take it off. You could try mounting it on a cheap filter or hood. And you could use an Exacto knife. But no, I have no good ideas up my sleeves.

First I need to make a good set, and find out how to mount them on the lens.

I think using black construction paper is my best bet.

If I remember correctly Tiffen has a similar set of filters. I think I've used them and didn't really like 'em that much.

you can do that with a lens baby easily enough. You just make your own aperture disks.
