For this body I wouldn't worry as there are hardly any demos around right now even. The Nikon boxes are usually sealed with tape over the pull out tab I do know that at least here in Asia. The bodies are in sealed plastic wrap as well, but again its too early on for any worrying about tampered D800 cameras and Nikon is very good about its new releases. Camera stores themselves though are another story though. I have heard that you can trick the actuations on a body by taking shots without a card in the body! This way the buffer gets cleaned as soon as you insert a card and begin shooting. In theory you could take thousands of shots without saving them of course on the camera's buffer, and they will never be recorded as an actual actuation.

I didn't know until I was playing with an opened D3X in Korea back in 2010, and the shop owner said careful "its new" I asked can I take a few shots with it and my Zeiss 35mm? He said yes but wait let me remove the CF card first! I bet he put it back in the box and sold it for new, but god knows how many actuations this new camera really had on it.

With brick & mortar camera stores, often it's like buying a new car from a dealer. Although you're the first to buy it, others might have taken it for a test drive or two. Legally speaking, it's considered new until first purchase.

Hate to burst your bubble but it can have shutter actuations straight from the factory.

Unless my EXIF data was wrong when I first got my D7000 from Best Buy a few days before the official launch it had 23 actuations on it.

Couldn't care less anyways my D7000 is still going strong over 52K shots.

They should not have a shutter count if they are new. It's far more likely that some unsavory Best Buy employee took your camera for a spin.

I used http://www.myshuttercount.com/ and my first shot was indeed the first shot taken on my camera. Again, I had no idea about this site, very interesting indeed. Will make buying a used body much more satisfying.

Hi,

In general, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

You might even want someone in the chain to check it out. Sometimes service bulletins come out asking for firmware updates for bodies that will require an exposure or two even before the release of the camera.

Generally, the stock stays in the box, but small shops have so few copies to show. It's become so tough for the 'Not B&H' stores to stay in business.

My D90 has over twice the it's life activations on it and still going, and I haven't checked the D7000, but I would guess that it would be close [a typical theatrical shoot might be 4K shots in a rehearsal each day over 3 or 4 days over 7-10 weeks, plus the other stuff the camera does, it adds up]. The expectations Nikon claims for the cameras are conservative, so a few shots probably won't matter much.

I would really enjoy the and report back and make us envious.

My best,

Mike

I've only ever purchased used, so this new stuff is well.... New to me.

Take a picture and upload it to www[.]nikon shutter count[].com ... if it shows "1" then your camera is a virgin.

That said, the D800 shutter is tested for 200,000 cycles and it's not exactly as if your camera can give you any STD if someone else in the store has taken a picture or two (to check the camera is working before selling it to you). There really is no need to obsess about this kind of thing.

MMmm a lot of times a camera is tested and adjusted before it is packaged and leaves the factory. So there is nothing wrong when the shuttercount is higher than 1 .

There are several softwares that can check the exif data as well to see the shutter count. I would be upset if it didn't look new as they had actually taken it out and used it...not for the fact that I am sure they didn't take it for a test drive like in Ferris Bueller's day off, but more like if I wanted a demo/open boxed model I would wait and pay for a demo model. New should be new and unopened (they can stamp the card when I buy it)...especially when it cost $3000+. Just IMO though...others might not care as much, but for me that is lots of money and I would hate to be disappointed by that. I think more will share that sentiment than being OK with it being open and used.

Most Nikon bodies come in unsealed boxes (I've yet to buy one that did including my D300 and D700). If they opened up the box to play with it, there should be a release count on the battery (unless they where smart enough to recharge the battery). The only other way would be to check the shutter count against the number of photos that you know that you have taken.

I'm on my way to pick up my D800 I preordered from my local Camera shop.
I've been going to this shop for years and have never had a problem.
But after reading through the forum a bit (I'm still new here) I came across a few stories of paying for new and receiving used or knockoffs being sold as authentic.
The shop I go to often opens the boxes of lenses or bodies to stamp their store's seal on the warranty.
Call me cautious (or paranoid) but is there anything to look for before leaving the store? Perhaps a menu setting or a factory seal/sticker?
