Gabbb said:
The only meaningful difference between 3100 and 5100 is the lcd. The sensor isn't really better, has less shadow noise in raw, but that's about it. Having the high resolution screen comes in handy when you are manually focusing in live view, on the other hand I greatly dislike swivel screens...

I don't think so. The D3100 sensor does not equal the D5100 sensor...you would then be saying the D3100 = D7000 minus some features. I enjoy the swivel screen on my D5000 and although I don't always use it, it has been useful at times...I mean worst case you turn it around a leave it in place???

D5100 -
More MP than the D3100
More frames per second
Higher ISO and better ISO performance
Better dynamic range
Better LCD
External mic jack (if video is your thing)
In camera HDR
More color depth
Better battery life

Overall I think the D5100 gives you more room to grow in. The D3XXX series have always seemed very P&S to me...they don't feel cheap, but I am not sure how else to describe it...I don't like the buttons and the way they are setup.

Recent Convert, also if you want to ever use it for more range I think the D5100 is the way to go. It isn't that much more expensive, and the D3100 is very basic.

I'd like to expand that thread a little. My wife has taken up photography by borrowing my D700 and operating it in "idiot mode", as she calls it (P, ISO 1600, WB=A, JPG rather than NEF). She does not like my 14-24 (my favorite lens), nor the 50/1.4, but she delights in using the 105mmVR/2.8. Under the circumstances, would you guys and gals recommend a D3100 for her, or should I go for the D5100. I could be persuaded at times to trade, when my 300mm isn't long enough . . .

I wouldn't bet for d3200 pushed back. I believe Nikon knows that they absolutely need a new modell this year, or they'll lose a lot of customers.

Not really. What does it have to compete with? The D3100 is already better than the T3 and I would even put it up against the T2i. It is a capable camera I think...I just don't like the features and feel of it. I think the D5100 blows away the T3i and 60D performance wise. So bang for the buck entry level the D5100 is a good deal.

Go with the D5100, as tcole suggested. If money's really tight, still go with the D5100.

Sure, there will be one, most likely this year, but hey, why not just wait for the d3300, it will probably have an even better sensor.

Yes, we all think there will be a D3200 and it should come out sometime this year. Problem is none of us know when, or even if, it will be out due to the delay those floods caused. One rumor I saw was that it would have 24mp sensor, which is really hard to believe. I don't think that will happen.

There is supposedly a D3200 for dummies book already being made, but I don't think there have been any solid rumors on a release date or specs. If you have no camera I might recommend the D5100 and just buying it now. I never liked the D3XXX series cameras much. The D5100 has similar performance to the D7000, but costs around $500 or so less. If you wait for the next best camera to come out you will always be waiting since there is always something new being developed. If they stay on their usual update schedule the D3XXX is up for a new body sometime soon, but I think the disasters last year might have pushed it back. The D3100, D5100 and D7000 were all made it the Thailand plant that was heavily damaged in the flooding last year.
