I'm sure it is old stock being redistributed as well as a lot of refurbished units are coming out as well. Price is still below the D800, and the D800 will not be available in stores (as they will be spoken for) for quite some time. Prices will hold steady, plus Nikon now has control over pricing.

I have watched so many videos I can't find it in my history, but I know I saw a Nikon rep say they can not make any more and quoted the updated battery laws in Japan saying they can't build any new devices that are not in compliance. Currently FX camera are only made in Japan but it did sound like they could start up Thailand or China if another disaster hit. CarryCableGuy, posted an interview (on the D800 thread) where a rep said they could build more, but I think that is a "save face" move as Nikon knows many wanted a lower resolution, high ISO camera in this realm.

I'm sure others will jump in if I'm wrong, but according to what I've read Nikon have no immediate plans to discontinue the D700. The D90 sold (and continued to top the sales charts) long after the release of the D7000. IMHO a company would be foolish to forcibly stop selling an old model just because they've launched some newer, they should keep selling both and watch closely the demand. If customers still buy the D700 (and I don't see any reason why they shouldn't), why tell a buyer you can't have it?

I've noticed over the past week that the D700 is now back in stock at some of the bigger retailers (Amazon, Adorama, J&R). All of these were out of stock not more than 2 weeks ago.

Thoughts? New shipments or just old stock that is being sent back to Nikon from smaller shops and then re-distributed? The price is still the same at $2700 and not discounted any.
