You trim the sides of the 24x36mm sensor to a 24x30mm area, which makes it a crop from 36mp to 30mp (unless you chose small or medium jpg, in which case it will scale down).

so ignorant quesiton, but is 5:4 at 36mpx or is it down scaled to fit in?

You found it before I did, yeah to me it looks like the D800 does have the 5:4 crop

It shows a 5:4 crop pixel format in the specs listed on the NikonUSA website.

5:4 format (30 x 24)
(L) 6,144 x 4,912
(M) 4,608 x 3,680
(S) 3,072 x 2,456

I shoot a lot of portraits and love the 5:4 crop mode on the my D3. I was looking forward to shooting large family groups with the higher resolution. Without the 5:4, you have to guess where an 8x10 is going to crop. It seems like it would of been easy to add this feature on the D800. Just wondering if anyone else agrees with me?
