Thank you for such a complete timeline. Doing some very quick research, and if it is true the D7000 replaced the D90, the D90 was released on August 14, 2008 and the D7000 was released on October 14, 2010, so your 3 month rule may well be the case. I hope it doesn't hold true for the D7000 replacement, but if it does, I can wait. There's nothing wrong with my D5100. I just would prefer some of the features available on the D7000, which are not buried in menus......

rbrylawski said:
Yes, if history repeats, the D7000 replacement will be announced in August. Perhaps I'm hopeful, history won't repeat as I want the next generation. I could buy the D7000, but it would bug me to get one now and then see the new model just a few months from now......

Still 1-2 years or so away. Time frame has shifted on all DX models due to the floods.

Historically (your time is correct without the flooding) that body line has been the last to be released in a 2-3 year period starting with the D4 line. It seems to work well as in the mannor each body is released, it does not cut into sales of others and still keeps the line up to date.
The release progression - Nikon has always released in this schedule:
* D4/D800/D400 (released close together) New AF, Metering, processor, standard introduced. Bodies released to be ready for the Summer Olympics.
* D3200 - consumer refresh approx every 24 mths - 3 months after previous above
* D5200 - consumer refresh approx every 24 mths - 3 months after previous above - Matches the D7000 IQ with better video.
* D7100 - consumer refresh approx every 30 mths - High iso quality very close to D400 - 3 months after previous above
* D4s/x - High ISO, IQ new sensor standard (2 years out from original D4 release). Bodies released to be ready for the Winter Olympics (usually).
* D3300 - 3 months after previous above
* D5300 - High iso quality comes close to D400
* D7200 - High iso quality beats to D400 - everyone again claims D400 line is going away and this is the new pro DX.
* D5/D900/D500 bodies released to be ready for the Summer Olympics.

This has been the body progression since 2002 with some small variations. The D300s for instance had to be refreshed out of cycle to add video to meet customer demand or loose sales to Canon. The D60 was added due to how bad the D40x noisy IQ was. It will be interesting to see if Nikon starts refreshing bodies just because of video or if they will just put the "best" in and not hold back at all.

I find that incredible.

Not a transfer incurring a fee hike, the price went up at all stores over the price they were displaying. They had got no stock for so long, that the ticket was just out of date.

At least in the UK, no one store is more than about an hour from any other store. Here, getting an item from another store can mean delays. In my case, it would have had to come the same distance as London to Glasgow (just over 400 miles), not for example one part of the same city to another (10 miles, which is typical for London) or from say, Ipswich to Norwich, which is really only about 50 miles.

I went into my local BB on the way into work yesterday. None out. Talked to plonker assistant person who was more worried about chatting up the girl he was with. We can get one from outside the area ... Uh oh. It'll cost an extra couple of hundred dollars."

I find that incredible. Not the bit about the sales guy being more interested in the girl next to him.........I see that all the time :-) but the fact that a company would charge the customer to get an item from another store! Are BB's franchises in the States? Obviously you guys are talking vastly greater distances than we are in the UK, but any British chain will transfer an item from one store to another in a day or two F.O.C.

That would be one interpretation, but it is a more likely event for the second half of the year, if we look at past dates.

I pulled up Amazon from Google search - I found 70 - mostly in kits from various stores. Regional, local stores have them but you have to do more than just do a simple search or drive to one store. It did see at a couple saying that stock will be available in March. It seems like Nikon has a whole boat of cameras heading this way that has everything on it.

Observation of Best Buy - I have seen in the past couple of years that the High dollar items, Higher end cameras, receivers, monitors, and the like are stocked at very, very low levels.

I will chime in with some info since I have been searching for a D700 as well. Like many have said, every authorized reseller in my area (Tennessee) has been out of the D7000. Today I was able to find a refurbished one through the Nikon store. I know some are not interested in refurbished items, but I was much more willing to do that than roll the dice with one off ebay. Again, just passing along the info. Here's the link and it looks like they are still available. http://shop.nikonusa.com/store/nikonusa/en_US/pd/productID.223577500

I am in NorCal and I can go on a waiting list if I purchase the camera body. I simply can not find the new body widely availiable from a source I know and trust. I did find one from a reputable source for body only at $1800. A local retail search takes me out over 50 miles for some retailers and 350 miles for others with no availiable product. I am still waiting to hear from Nikon who told me that they are fielding numerous calls and they "Will not speculate when product will be availiable". I have requested additional information from someone who is more familiar with corporate production to let me know what to expect.

And where might it be widely available from then?

Not generally in my area (see reply to waterengineer)...

EDIT: This morning I did find ONE body only in a store about 60 miles away (full price plus tax obviously). They said they would not have any more in stock for the foreseeable future.

I'm in FL, but that is not the point. And, I am not going to get into a fight about this matter. The point is many posters, in addition to me, have pointed out wide availability of the camera. In many persons view scarcity is non-existent. Cameras are available if you really want one.

I'm not wanting to get into a fight with anyone... All I am saying is that it is not available in my area (Texas).

I went into my local BB on the way into work yesterday. None out. Talked to plonker assistant person who was more worried about chatting up the girl her was with and he looked into the computer system: "Sorry ... I'll look... None in the area.

O.P., where you be? I just checked inventory at two big box stores....you know....the ones with the huge blue and yellow sign with two words on it, both of which start with "B". Between the two stores there are three D7K's waiting for a new home.

Those cameras took all of about three minutes to find.

Finding one isn't that tough. Seriously, the extra $150 or whatever you think you are saving will be forgotten about by the end of the year.

I did check in with Nikon and the response was vague from customer service. I called and asked to have someone to speak with and the rep on the phone noted many calls a day are coming in asking this same question.

I do understand the flooding situation and I am willing to wait. I think it would be good business for Nikon to provide some guidance as to when production will resume and when the D7000 will be availiable in the market. I am not interested in a refurb unit nor a camera with various lens as a package.

I reviewed the investor relation information to see if they had any notes about production to report in those doc's and no specifics were provided.

Waiting for a call from Nikon to see what they say. If they call I will post here.
