Ouch...for $740 I think I will pick up the 10-24 instead. I still think the range is so small I would be annoyed with it.

If you have a use for it such as interior photography, it is OK, but yes - It does disappoint me when I zoom it so I think of it as a 2.8 prime.

The DX mode on FX cameras essentially only uses the area of the sensor that would be covered by a DX sensor. It would be the same as taking the whole shot and then cropping out the outer portion of it. Essentially, this would turn the D800 into an expensive D7000, but otherwise it would be functionally the same.

Can anyone answer this for me? Knowing that many people have used the current version of the Tokina 11-16mm on their Full Frame cameras at 16mm with no vignetting, does anyone know if setting the forthcoming D800 in DX mode will allow one to use the full 11-16mm range of that lens (or the new one) without vignetting? I'm unfamiliar with how "DX mode" actually works on those cameras. Thanks.

$75 more? Now that made me laugh. Looks like the price will be about $300 more, pushing it to around $1,000. That is around $400-500 more than the 12-24 f/4. It is still a great price for what it is, but a bit steep for me to justify selling my 12-24 f/4 and getting it for so little advantage.

I don't know...I think the 11-16 and 12-24 are different lenses. Although the 11-16 is faster I think I would feel restricted by the zoom range. I have used my 18-200 too much to like 5 mm of zoom. At least with the 12-24 it might save me from switching lenses every once in a while. I think the 11-16 is more specialized and it is almost like a super wide prime where the 12-24 gives a little more leeway to just a wide angle lens at its longest. Also I have found F4 to be sufficient for everything I have shot so far even with fairly bad lighting.

And actually money wise. For the price of the new 11-16 I would probably opt for the Nikon 10-24 instead. Gain a mm wide and lots the other direction and making it 10 times for versatile.

I agree. Looks like I might grab this one when available. I had the current version but returned it 'cause I didn't think I'd use that focal length very much but have since missed some very good photo opportunities without it.

Possibly because with Tokina, everyone just decides to love on their lenses instead of bickering about everything and having no clue what they like, as is the case with this hypothetical other company. :P

TaoTeJared said:
Wow - that surprised me as well. AFS motor, aspherical element, new coating, probably not worth an upgrade but if you don't have a screw drive AF in your body, good update.

I still thing the 12-24 is more versatile - and $500 cheaper.
15mm DOF at 4ft:
f/2.8 = 2'7"
f/4 = 4'2"

I personlly think it's worth upgrading from the 12-24mm f/4 II to the 11-16. AF-S equivalent v. the loud autofocus motor in the 12-24 II is a nice touch, plus for my purposes doing plenty of low light shooting at least the extra stop of aperture is great. Extra 1mm of wide is nice for landscape stuff, this would definitely replace my 12-24 in my travel kit.

Not saying it's necessarily better, since it is a different lens with a different aperture and focal range. Especially now that I have the 24mm f/1.4, I'm not going to miss the 16-24mm range. :)

I will stick with my comment :) They added the AF-S motor, but I left out the coating. Not a game changer if you have a body with the ability to use lenses without the built in AF motors. Plus the price will be more and probably will stay high for a while. The price of the 12-24 F4 II has gone up $50 since I got it.

Ok, so this thread was particularly well timed. I guess I have to take back everything I said about there being no sign of an update to the lens.

The new lens diagram looks exactly the same as the old one, so I would say that the only change in optical performance might be from the coatings (a bit less flare, but the old one was ok with that so I don't know if you would notice it). Of course, there is an AF-S equivalent and there may be some improvements in ergonomics or build quality (unlikely but possible). Still, if I had to get one now, I would get the new one.

As for a possible upgrade of the current Tokina 11-16mm ; the price of that lens was at $719.00 USD for the last several months and it recently has gone down to $699.00. I don't know if that due to weakening sales or an effort to sell off inventory. But it's something to think about.

I figured there was a reason for the sudden price drops and rebates.

What benefit is the aspherical lens?

just received a email form *LINK REMOVED*. Adorama just dropped the price of the lens to $649 plus you still get the $40 mail in rebate. $609 final price. thats better than it was this past holiday season. still don't know. deciding weather to just get a good laptop first. $600 is a little steep for me considering I still have a few things to pay for from Christmas yet. need to sell the TC-17EII teleconverter first, that would help.

All I could say is if you get the (current) 11-16 you will not be disappointed. Actually, I can't see what Tokina could possible do to improve it aside from adding an AF-S style focus motor to make it a little faster/quieter. The glass is awesome.

I think something you should really ask yourself is what will the 11-16mm Tokina do that your that your 16-35mm wont do taking a step back or two...

Just one thing, the angle of view is different. So yes you can step back and fill the frame with the same objects but the image will be different. Just as with a telephoto lens you get a compression effect or distortion, with a wide angle you get an extension effect or distortion. To use a wide angle lens to its greatest advantage it good to understand this. If you search angle of view, Wikipedia has a nice example with pink and blue water bottles.

BTW, I love my Tokina 11-16!
