How did I miss this forum.... my D90 came with the 18-105 Nikkor which I have replaced with the 24-120mm in prep for FX change. But the 18-105 is an excellent walk around lens. I use my D90 up to ISO 6400 which will give images in near darkness. Sometimes a flashlight is used on the subject just to give something to see. However, if I were to pick another lens with what has been stated is in hand, the 50mm and 85mm, I would suggest a 20, 24, or 28mm and find out how to use the camera. The zoom lens makes us lazy in some cases. Of course it will allow a photo of more what you may wish while a fixed focal length lens will limit you, but if one just uses zoom lenses, one really never finds out what the fixed end will do. In Europe in 1970, I had an 85mm and 24mm on my F bodies and shot 90+% with the 24. Get a nice short lens and learn, yup, learn what it can do.

And you won't find many people finding the 18-105mm crappy ! That lens probably gives 90-95% of the quality that can be obtained from the 5 times more expensive pro glasses while covering twice the range.

If you feel you have already reached your peak and the only way to perform 5-10% better is via pro glass , that's fine . However, the difference may not be so visible as you are limited by a 12 Mp APS-C sensor in a D90.

Nah... I purchased my D90 body only so I didn't have the crappy kit lens...

I'm just worried you are not aware what lens you exactly have and I will just go ahead and guess you already have the 18-105mm - which most people would call a " walk around lens " , exactly what you're looking for.

Suggesting 10-20mm's , 70-200 f2.8s is a bit pushing it - don't you think ,guys ??

Yeah you are all over the place from what you have, what you are saying you want and what you really need. I still really can't determine what you are wanting. The 28-70 range is great for portraits...you could walk around with it but 28 is not wide enough and 70 is not really long enough for sports or anything. You could try one of the 70-200 F2.8 third party lens, but then you still have the problem that 70 isn't wide enough...it really isn't a true walk around lens.

The best options as mentioned are probably the 18-105 or the 18-200 if you want a single lens.

That is what I did when I was learning (use exclusively a 50mm) as it helps one appreciate composition and find their range... Currently I prefer wideangles but I use them for sports, portraits, and street photography as they bring your subject out of the background with perspective and not bokeh... I perfer my teles on landscapes as they flatten out perspective like alarge format camera does and distort less. It is not to say I don't use teles for portraits either because I do but I had to learn "how" to use the current lenses I have...

There is no perfect walkaround lens. Some perfer superzooms as it allows you to capture stuff from afar as well as closeup without much movement. I prefer to focus on a subject and "make" a photo based on compositional elements, mood, psychology, & perspective.

A 50mm makes you work more but it allows you to slow down and study what you are making a photograph of...

I like two of the ideas others have posted. The 16-85mm lens would be a nice add and be a good do it all type lens. Also selling what you have and getting the 18-200 might be the right idea too, it might be the only lens you will need. For me I have two lenses and both are great walk arounds, a 50mm 1.4 and a 24-70 2.8 both Nikon. I don't need anything else then these for what I do and only plan to add a 135mm 2 once it is updated. What you have to figure out is what kind of photography you want to do and how you want to use your gear. Many would say your 85mm is perfect for a walk around for them.

from this what I read it only means to me that You really don't know what You are looking for. please don't take me wrong but IMHO dslr is not the solution You are looking for. If I were You I would got me Fuji Finepix HS30EXR, excellent camera with extremely versatile fast lens, good features and reasonably priced.

I think the Tamron 28-75 mm,F 2.8.is just what you need

Better idea. Take just the 50 until you gain strong compositional skills, then get the lens you need. I personally use wideangle lenses for portraits and telephotos for landscapes...

You already have some of the focal lengths you need but in several lenses and you don't want to change lenses. You say you have a tight budget so sell them all and get the 18-200mm VR2 - or how about the 18-270mm Tamron which is a little cheaper?

You say buildings and nature but that means a low end of 10mm and a high of at least 300mm!

My advice is the 18-200 VR and then use it until you have a better grip on what you need.

What I am looking for is a fast lens,with zoom capabilities for far abjects.
to have some nice photos for my kids while playing or running.

I echo Adamz recommendations. I have both the 16-85--which is my walk around lens--and the Sigma 10-20--for my D7000. They are both sharp and versatile.

huhas you do not tell which kit lens you have

but given you already have 3 lenses, you should a have a better idea than us of how much wider / longer you want to go

Regards Brand, the advantage Tamron lens have is that they are cheap

This is a Nikon forum, so do not be too surprised if we recommend Nikon lenses

get sigma 10-20 (can be the old one) and nikon 16-85 vr, You'll be more than pleased with the results.

18-105mm - is a walk around lens. The 18-105mm (equiv. 27-160 on film) will get you your wide angle for nature and buildings that the 28-75 (equiv 42-112 on film) will not. 28-75mm is a very odd range on a DX camera and never seems to be wide enough for people. Most use that on DX mostly for portraits. Good lens, but I think it falls short of what your describing you want to do.

I am looking to have a lens, that i can have nice shots for the kids while playing,Buildings,Nature....etc.

I don't need it as a telephoto lens.

To take good photos, you need good glass and good glass costs money

I would try and save a few more pennies and take adamz advice

Digital cameras tend to go out of date in a few years, lenses can last decades and can be an excellent investment

PS

I would not glue the excellent 18-200 onto your D90 as you will eventually need a ultra wide angle lens

Then and only then you might consider a non Nikon lens eg the Sigma 10 -20 or the Tokina 11-16mm

first of all, if You don't like swapping lenses buy compact camera
second of all, get nikon 16-85 (better quality) or 18-105 (excellent quality to price ratio)
third of all, the range depends on what You shooting, for one it's 50mm, for others it's 200mm, You can always get the 18-200vr and glue it to Your d90

BTW:
please don't use urgent when it's not, Your life nor Your income doesn't depend on this, not to mention the fact that this topic has been covered over here many, many, many... times

Hi, I am seeking a decent Advise.
I have a Nikon D 90 with the Basic Kit Lenses, as well , I have the 50 mm & 85 mm Nikkor F 1.8.
I am looking to purchase a walk around lens,I hate changing & Swapping lenses.
I am considering Tamron 28-75 mm,F 2.8.
I can't afford the Nikkor Lens which is OUT OF MY BUDGET.
Can any recommend or advise ?
1) Am I chossing the reight range for the walk around purpose & Travelling lens ( 28-75 mm) ?
2) Is Tamron 28-75 mm is the right desicion ?
