You can currently buy a D700 on Craigslist in Atlanta for $1,600 - $2,000. When the new bodies are more readily available (late summer), I think I will be able to pick up a D700 for $1,500 or maybe less. That's in the southeast united stated.

You can't get the new bodies yet so the (low) supply of used gear is holding up the price. That will change as the new bodies hit the market and people need to sell to be able to buy the new gear.

First number = what it goes for (body only) on ebay generally - Second number what I expect it will be when the D400 comes out.

D80 - $400 - $300 really old
D90 - $600 - $500
D200 - $600 - $400 really really old
D7000 - $1000 - $1000 too new
D300/s - $1200 - $1000
D700 - $2300 - $2100
D3 - $3200 - $3000
D3s - $4600 - $4400 - just above the D800
D3X - $6800 - $5000 - this one is going to take a dump

Note you didn't ask about the D2x - The d300 matched it's image quality (for the most part) and it dropped to just above the D300 when it came out. The D3x I believe could do this as well and drop to 4500 real quick. At that price I bet most will just hang onto it rather then have to write that much off. It will all come down to tax write off limits for what happens to it - at least in the US.

The D80 goes for less than $500, sometimes. I've seen them go for as low $399 with less than 10k actions. D90, closer to $599. D200 seems to be around $500-550.

however skinbrit has a point... When I was looking to buy a flash I went looking for a used sb800 and at the time they were in so high of demand most of the local stores (if they had one) were selling em for around $850. I said screw it and jumped on a sb900 for $415 brand spankin new...

You hit the nail right on the head SkintBrit. Be it micro or macro economice, the consumer market, within many sovereign state, is all about Supply & Demand.

With that said, as a seller, within the secondary market, one usually set the price, thus it all depends on what you are willing to accept. However, within the privet market (ie friend or family) supply and demand has no meaning. After all one would expect to get "a beter deal" in the privet market...if you get my meaning.

In a nut shell I'm afraid it's simply "supply and demand"! I can see all the first generation FX bodies holding their value pretty well, as there are a LOT of DX shooters looking to try their first one.

The launch of the D4 and potentially the D800 and D400 in the near future there will likely resulting many used cameras hitting the market. I'm personally looking at unloading a D200, D700 and D7000. So the discussion here is; What determines the used market value of a camera? and, What would you estimate to be the current used market value of the following:

D80
D90
D200
D7000
D300/s
D700
D3
D3s
D3X
