That will be an interesting ratio to see indeed. I seem to be seeing more and more Nikon bodies among entertainment photogs over the past couple of years. The other day, I saw a pile of Nikon bodies, all in one spot, at a movie premiere:

Judging how close the control set on the the D7000 is close to the D4 I wonder what punch they will have to pull to make the D400 worth it...

Shutter, new card slot, video, meter, upgraded AF (-2ev!), lan port, HDR, time-lapse .... If you look at the specs the D300/D700/D3 had just about the same things. There are other threads that go through where things were cut for the D7000. The summary of of all the threads: If you use it, it's worth it, if not, then no it won't be.

-The d300 already has the 51 af points but the upgrade would be much better.

It will be interesting if Nikon does turn the D400 into the Pro DX version of the D4. The D300 almost did it - add a few more things and it would have been.

It will be curious to see what is cut from the D800 vs the D4 if anything.

Yup, and throw in that 91k metering sensor from the D4 too. Full mag alloy body, bigger, tougher, pro style controls on top etc. I'd grab one if it is under $2000.

Easy answer, the D400 needs things like, bigger buffer than the D7000 (its way too small). 20 14bit RAW lossless compressed would be nice, vs the 9 of the D7000. Faster burst rate, 8FPS. Dual card slots, CF and QXD or whatever the new CF cards are called.

I guess a Pc sync and 51 AF points would seal the deal (the 39 points of the D7000 was an obvious cripple)

I willing the D400 will be a 24mp with the usable iso of the D7000. Blah for me at this point.

I bet the ratio will be probably the same as it has ever been in London. When someone is shooting 400, 500, 600mm switching brands would be a steep cost. Video will be the test for some though - If Nikon comes through that could push some across that line.

Nikon's DX line lately has followed Sony's releases by a couple of months - maybe there will be a D800/400 release. (oh please oh please put a FX 12-16mp sensor in a D400) Hey a guy can dream can't he?

+1, but it's not looking likely

It will be interesting to see the nikon/canon ratio amongst photographers at the london games.

I'm just interested in seeing when the D400 gets released - That will give a good indication on where Nikon's at on recovering from all of last year's disasters. The D300/s are aging but at the same time I haven't heard anything from canon on a 70d/7d II at all which may give them some breathing room.

@PB PM +1 , it's olympics and Euro 2012 year, releasing d4 is much better idea than releasing d800, at least from the professional and marketing point of view

I agree, I think it makes complete sense for Nikon to release its pro camera first. Nikon makes far larger margins on pro equipment, so it is only logical for it to be release first, not to mention their desire for it to be available to NPS members for the Olympics. From Nikon's standpoint (marketing) that is far more important than feeding the pent up desires of a few winy people (in other words the vocal minority). The D800 will sell in larger numbers than the D4 (most likely), so it really doesn't matter if it comes out 4-6 months later.

I don't think Canon pushed them at all - this is both their usual release time frames for new bodies. Their delay (or push up - however you want to take it) for the 5dIII may give Nikon a reason to wait on the D800.

I just think it has been fun to watch everyone's desires get the best of them for almost 2 years thinking a D800 should have been released. ;)

As an observation I think it is just funny how everyone has been desiring an upgrade to a D700 almost since it came out and now it may not be announced till after the D4.

As a reminder the D3 and D300 were announced together and the D700 came out about a year later.

I looked back and about 18 months ago (for my own purpose of looking for future expense planning) these were my estimates based on previous releases (not announcements):

D4 Sept-Oct 2011
D800 July-Aug 2012
D400 Jun-Oct 2011
D7100 Sept-Oct 2012
D5200 Apr-May 2013
D3200 Mar-Apr 2012

These were all before the earthquake and flooding. Move the D4 & D400 and everything else sort of looks to be on key. I still had the D800 at mid 2012.

Just thought it was interesting as I was going though my EOY budgets.
