Thanks for the help. I went online and found the info online also. Once getting past the brain stopping ability of the eggnog I made I realized I knew most of what I was reading.

I tried to show him how to figure out metering and focus without using the camera which is a lot of work for someone to try to figure out when learning. This is his first dslr and he has not had a "manual" camera in a long time. So I can get the exposure pretty close by looking at the light. Without a accurate meter for exposure and focus I feel that he is going o have a hard time.

I let him borrow my 1.8d for the trip he is going on. I let him look at my 1.8g while he was here. He seemed really excited about the 1.8d so I might pass that on and give the 1.8g to my second shooter who happens to be my wife+) I have been looking at the 50mm 1.4 nikon has but sigmas 1.4 is pretty amazing. I know everyone has differing opinions about sigma but if you get a good copy of a prime lens they are worth the money. When I have shot for good copies of sigma primes I have "NEVER" had a client mention the lens. If I can save the money on the lens and still get the shots I want then I will save the money. Im sure there are other posts about sigma lenses though.

So thanks for all the help once again and this is yet another reason that nikon rumors is so amazing.

Yes, non-CPU lenses can be used on the D7000 (not D90 or older), any of the D100/200/300/700 and all of the D1/D2/D3. I wouldn't suggest using them on any of the other models, since although you could meter manually, the focus confirmation dot is far less accurate than the other cameras so you won't get as good results. If he likes the lens a lot, I'd suggest the 1.8D which has essentially the same optics, has autofocus, and is still quite cheap at the expense of build quality.

The D80 does not directly support non-CPU lenses, so the meter is disabled. Being a non-CPU lens you must manually set the shutter speed on the camera, and set the aperture on the lens itself.

On the D700 it should be fully functional, if you input the non-CPU lens data correctly (again you must change the aperture manually on the lens itself).

Hey guys have a question for you all. My father in law has a d80 and he just spiced up the Nikon e series 50mm 1.8. I know that it is a manual lens but I am curious about why it does not work on the d80. It seems to not be able to find the aperture for the lens. Now I know that there is no communication between the lens and body but it should pick up a aperture right. I had a d80 but never shot with any manual only lenses.

It works on my d700 kinda....
Anyway Im at a little of a loss so any help would be appreciated. I know I could find it online but people are visiting and I don't need to be sitting in the office, and whats the point in being part of a forum if you never use it.

P.s. If this was answered somewhere a link to the post would be great. I did not see it in my search.
Thanks in advance and hopefully I will hear from you soon.
