While I certainly agree it would have been nice, even appropriate to show some "happier" moments in time, and we know there had to be some, these pictures are incredibly thought provoking and I thank the OP for sending out the link.

I'm afraid you're right TaoTeJared. Human beings will always be the same. But I don't want to be too pessimistic. I think the photographers all did their job correctly. It's just the selection that I find could have been a bit better :)

They're okay photos, but I agree, most of it is pretty sad stuff.

2011 was a pretty bad year.

The website is actually a social photosharing website that posts popular and "hot" photos and videos from around the web. I've got to admit though that the photo compilation in "most powerful image of 2011" is very noteworthy.

Bernard, I thought photos 6 (same-sex embrace), 19 (FDNY getting news of bin Laden's death), 23 (Egyptian men holding sign. Btw, the arabic portion reads: thank you... Egypt's youth), 42 (gay service members parade) and 45 (US soldier high fives Afghan boy) were definitely happy moments.

I also think some could argue that 12 (Christians watching over Muslims), 14 (girl greets her dog), 34 (demonstrator moons police), 35 (AK-47 lady), 39 (man with golden gun) and 40 (apocalypse man) are also happy.

Btw, anyone else notice that #4 is censored?... just saying.

There are some quite impressive photos there. Amazing how many feature "pepper spray." Gotta get some of that for my camera bag.
Number 10 looks like it came right out of a Steven Spielberg movie.

I wonder who selected those photos… They are obviously confused. A powerful image doesn't necessarily mean it has to be dramatic and linked to violence and death. It can be a happy one, and as far as I can see, there isn't a single one in that lot.
