Yes but, the SB900 must be in the line of sight of the camera
If it is behind the camera or out of sight, you will need a radio trigger, such as a pocket wizard . Yes photography is an expensive hobby

Thanks a lot for the welcome and the feedback guys, I am most likely getting a D7000, later the official grip and then an 85mm f1.8D. Then a tripod is getting close, with Manfrotto Manfrotto 055 XPROB being the most likely one. I will keep d5000 too, for street walks along with 35mm f1.8 to be lightweight!

PS: Fast question: With D7K I will be able to trigger SB900 wireless from camera right ?

Kind regards,
Nick

Hi tyranous,

I, too, respect 7crossing, but until you go pro, I would sell the D5000 and likely the 18-55 and pickup a D7000 with another kit lens such as the 18-105.

Agreed with TTJ.

I don't know what your budget will have left, and if you're making any money on the club scene, but if you are picking up some cash, a 105mm f2.8 would likely be a good buy. You might look for something used. It would do double duty with good bokeh for a portrait lens (with a lot of standoff - perhaps too much) and 2 stops from f1.4, and only 1 and a third stops from f2.0, not terribly so much.

You'll find that most portraits won't go at full open on a lens anyway. I have a older (30 years or so) f2.8 105mm that I've use every week.

A second possibility TTJ mentions is a 85mm f1.8. It provides some reach, bokeh, and speed, and it is economical. I have it, too, and use it a lot.

The 40mm and 60mm are too close to what you have to be really useful, although the 60mm is a great portrait lens.

Good luck and my best,

Mike

D7000 - AF drive for AFD lenses, more color bit depth, better high iso, better build and a whole slew of other things.

That's your $1000.

Personally I would sell the D5000 & 18-55mm and pick up a 50mm 1.8 &/or a 85mm 1.8. That will cover the low light set you need for concerts and bokeh for portraits. I respect sevencrossing's opinions, but at this stage starting out, you need glass more than a second body and the D5000 is new enough to sell but doesn't gain you as much as some fast glass too keep.

From what it sounds you like to shoot, I would get a macro after the fast, Bokeh glass. And then get one you need whether it be a 40, 60, 85 or the 105. They can double as good portrait lenses, but I always will grab a 1.8 over a 2.8 any day. The 105vr is great though, If you can swing it. No macro is good for anything fast moving (concerts) as the AF always will hunt a bit more since it is a macro.

7100 will be a year or two (no rumors at all).
D400 - many of us wish it will come soon, but I don't think anyone is putting their money on it until May next year. $2k when it comes. No clue what it will look like or be.

Welcome aboard Nick. I'm in total agreement with our other members in recommending the D7000.

You have informed us that one of your favorite type of photography is at night/low light situations, with that in mind, do you have a nice tripod? If so great, if not, put that on your list as well.

As for getting into macro photography you have two option to consider: 1) Get the Nikon Micro 105 2.8. I have this lens and love it. It is very fast and sharp. Fantastic for portrait photography...the bokeh is outstanding in isolating your subject. 2) Get the Canon 77mm 500D Close-Up lens for your 70-300. You will need a step up treat as well 67mm-77mm (about $10).

Happy shopping and good luck....cheers

Get the D7000 body. You will love it. Your existing lenses will work fine with it.

First of all hello to all readers of this forum, i am Nick and live in Greece. I've been reading the site for a long time and recently been reading the forum too. Seeing you have good knowledge and know what's going on in Nikon's market I would like some advice on the following case if you could:

- I know it looks like a usual topic where people ask for what to buy while not clarifying their shooting tendances, but I will be more specifig, I promise. -

My gear is as follows:
Nikon D5000
Nikon 35Mmm f1.8 G
Nikon 18-55 vr kit lens
Nikon 70-300 G VR
Tamron 17-50 f2.8 with stabilizer
Nikon SB-900
Nikon SB-400 (5k's flash was broken so I bought this for an immediate recover and lightweight)

I treat photography as a hobby but recently Im getting small jobs for a few $$ shooting misc things.

As a hobby Im shooting cats, street photography (including night), portraits of friends, few landscapes, and travel photos. I shoot very often in kinda low light without flash, that's my favourite.

As a more advanced hobby but a way to earn some money too, I am shooting events, like concerts, few sports, more portraits, or photograph products for web sites, and even shoot a band for promotional use in small posters or cd book booklet!

My budget would be up to 1000$ for this holiday session (or until April..), and I am considering three things:

* Get D7000, I feel restricted by the D5000 and need a more solid enthusiast DSLR to help me play on manual and the better AF and ISO performance in which D5000 is bad, plus the built-in motor and 2nd top screen. Also the screen on 5000 is small and low res. The viewfinder I have checked on 7k seems a very good improvement and makes it more enjoyable to shoot. On a last note, I like bigger bodies because of their grip. (+battery grip even better)

* Wait for d7100 (??) or d400 (i ll stay DX for ever, unless i go full pro some day).

* Get some glass, but what I am lacking? A good macro with a lot of light so i can shoot events? A super-wide?

I shoot very often in dark and low light, it's my favourite and I always use the available light except if I work on a club to shoot with the SB900. Finally, I've been shooting with a DSLR since August of 2010 and found out I am liking it every day more and more and want to get to a more professional level when I can and the budget allows.

Thank you for your time reading this,
Nick

PS: If i am violating the rules still on a casual thread like that please tell me! I tried to be as specific as I could!
