Ha! I don't know why I think its funny that you want to watch church in HD, but I do.

Usually Nikon just fixes bugs in firmware. I can't think of a time when they have added a truly useful feature. That said, Nikon seems to be committed to developing video as a feature (example: D300s added stereo audio in jack). I wouldn't expect new codecs in the current cameras, but it might come in the future.

Good afternoon

I planned to buy a standard-def video camera this year and maybe a DSLR next year. My conclusion on video cameras is that everything in my price range is bad quality or poorly designed.

Then I came across D-Movie. I had my eye on the D5000 as a possible contender for next year. But having watched some of the video clips people have taken with it... well... it looks AMAZING! And it's $200 more than a hi-def video camera that I thought was mediocre.

The only issues are:

- Motion JPEG files are HUGE and not the best format
- 5-minute maximum shooting time
- Lack of auto-focus while shooting video
- Lack of audio input (although I can live with that)

Seeing that this is a Rumors forum, what are the chances that the D5000 will have a firmware upgrade to support MPEG2, MPEG4, or AVCHD? Or that Nikon will have a new camera in the next year that overcomes the limitations of the D5000 in regard to video?

Video is a secondary thing for me... something to record the odd concert (legally), kid's birthday, or an event at church. I don't need much but for video cameras I can afford, I found:

- Canon FS200 or FS21 both shake so bad the video makes you ill
- Canon HF200 is twice the price and the video is mediocre
- Panasonic SDR-S26 is fair quality but you can't get long-life batteries or an external charger for it
- Panasonic SDR-H80 can't connect via USB without removing the battery and plugging in the AC adapter
- I refuse to buy Sony gear since the Root Kit incident... I'm not plugging their stuff into my computer

So I'm kind of stuck, but the D-Movie thing has me curious.

Any thoughts on what it's future might hold?

- Shaun
