I haven't had this problem, but if the lens was new or was sold as used and didn't say it was a problem I would either ask for a refund or a new lens hood. Unless the problem is the slot on the lens. I take mine off all the time and I haven't worn one out yet.

I'm with bernard on this one this should be covered by the warrenty and I'd go directly back to the shop right away this is unexceptable. Defective or not its not your problem. It does sound like a lens problem though and something I have not heard of before. It must drive you nuts!

Nope, not had that problem (looking round for some wood to touch)! Can you put a LITTLE bit of pressure on the small plastic clip (the thing that goes click) to see if you can increase the resistance by pushing it out a bit?

These must be covered by the guarantee, so if it's still valid, bring it/them back to the shop. :)

I have recently purchased two different Nikkor lens whose lens hoods do not "click" when they are turned to the "locked" position. The lens hoods move and have even been known to fall off.

The effected lens are:
AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED
and
AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G

The problem is especially bad with the 10-24mm, as any camera movement or the wind can cause the lens hood to rotate, and it falls off on a regular basis. I have replaced the lens hood on this lens and that did not make any difference, so I would have to assume the issue is with the lens itself (or, a whole bunch of lens hoods that are defective!).

Other recent lens purchases have not had any problems with the lens hoods. Is this an isolated problem and I've just gotten unlucky, or is there something else going on here? Is anyone else having problems with lens hoods that do not click in place when in the "locked" position?

It just seems weird that I'd suddenly get two different lens with the same problem and I've never had a problem before the last 6 months. Any ideas what's going on here?
