I think the reliablity has gone up a lot since they initially came out. I've never had one get corrupted on me. Reformating each time probably isn't bad idea though.

Don't worry, you're not missing too much. Having 8 gigs of photos to sort out in one sitting is a lot. And it takes up a heck of a lot of hard drive space.

By the way, how long do SD/SDHC cards last anyway? I reformat mine everytime I empty it. Is that necessarily a bad thing? Does it wear out the card faster? Thanks.

Really? I guess I had bad information. Its kind of a moot point because its the only spare card I have... <shrug>

Willis, your D40 should accept SDHC cards. I know mine does. I have an 8 gig Sandisk in there. I'm pretty sure every Nikon DSLR after the D50 accepts SDHC cards. The D80 does as well. The D50 does not accept them.

And since I do empty it pretty frequently, it's pretty much the only card I use. And I like having the flexibility of shooting more. I can always delete, but you can't always have more room.

Willis - I shot RAW only (plus small jpg for preview in Aperture - works faster that way than generating the previews) and 8GB works most of the time for me - around 500 images, sometimes I need to add the second card (but as You I also try to pre-edit my pictures in camera - it's much faster than on the screen)

Adamz - I shoot 4gb cards. My D40 only takes regular SD (not SDHC), so 4GB is the max. I've never filled it up in a single shoot (I try to delete my junk shots on the fly, because I don't want to deal with them later... and I almost always shoot JPEG). If you shoot RAW at 12MP's then your going to need the 8-16 range. If I made a lot of shots, I'd probably prefer the security of having my shoot on multiple cards to the convenience of having one large capacity card... but that's just me.

NikoDoby - People use them as the primary storage in net books, I don't think are quite fast enough to run applications off of, but if you aren't to picky about performance, it would definitely do the trick. I suppose if you did the fast version of raid (stripe 1) you might get something approximating normal hard drive speed.

To be clear, the 2TB is the theoretical limit. It will be quite some time before we actually get there. We won't even have 64GB SDHC cards for a few months. Maybe when the capacity gets up there we could do bracketed RGB shots and not have to deal with Bayer Interpolation. That would be kind of cool.

I barely trust my 8gb cards to hold my photos while on location so I'm not so sure about using a 2TB card. But if you had dual card slots like on a D3 you could have a RAID configuration in your camera! :)

I really wonder if you could use these as an SSD for a server or something. Image 10 of these cards grouped together! Imagine the physical space that would use up and how much you could store on it! 8^0

Willis - so I guess I'm in minority, as I use either 4 or 8GB cards :)

SDHD goes up to 64GB... that's what most of us have.

SDXC can go up to 2TB, but I'm not aware that it has been implemented by Nikon. Add that to my mega camera list along with the OLED touch screen, Projector, WiFi, waterproofing, etc ;)

Haha, Willis. :D

Just make multiple copies of everything on many many of these cards right? :D

And although it is impressive, I am a SD card kinda guy, cause I own a D40. Anyway, I thought SD cards were theoretically capable of 2 TB too?

And what's stopping Compact Flash from having this capacity too? I mean, it's bigger than SD and Memory Stick right? So you should be able to pack it in right?
