1992 - college they didnt have internet in college... they had weird digital lines, so to get things to work with internet providers (they did exist before web browsers) you had to buy a digital to analog converter so your modem could convert analog to digital. :)

Haha, at the old place I dormed at on campus, they used to give us internet through a phone jack. But since we don't have modems anymore, our campus actually sold a special cable that had an ethernet plug at the other end.

This was in the fall of 2008 to spring of 2009. Needless to say, I got the heck out of there as quickly as possible.

@mikenothing: Sorry, I have to pull you up there. According the Canon info, the EOS-1D X has a 1000Base-T ethernet port - that's 1Gbs NOT 100Gbs or even 10Gbs.

Thunderbolt currently runs at 20Gbs Bi-directional which is 20x the throughput (headline figure only) of the ethernet port (Full duplex) on the EOS. I could also go into why Thunderbolt will have a much lower latency (which also affects performance) than a standard ethernet port, but that's for another time...

the ethernet thing is brilliant.

its 100gbit/s these days (the speed thunderbolt is expected to reach within the next TEN years), all computers have an ethernet connection, maybe not a 100g one, but at least a 10g.

many of us already have have ethernet hub (routers).

i believe canon is pointing out the stupidity of usb 3 and thunderbolt. why develop inferior, expensive new technologies, when the solutions already exists, and are already installed on every pc around the world ?

this is the technical spec of a new macbook pro connections, copied from the mac website :

MagSafe power port
Gigabit Ethernet port
FireWire 800 port (up to 800 Mbps)
Three USB 2.0 ports (up to 480 Mbps) (i think this is a mistake, it only has 2 usb ports)
Thunderbolt port (up to 10 Gbps)
Audio line in
Audio line out
ExpressCard/34 slot
Kensington lock slot

usb 3 and thunderbolt are just the "new thing", ill take the 100gbs ethernet any day, thanks very much.

NikoDoby said:
Full frame Nikons are not made in Thailand. Flooding there would affect a D300 DX replacement. It's my understanding that much if not all of Nikon's Pro production has (or is) being moved to China and /or Malaysia. I don't think the Thai plant has the capacity to run both a DX and FX assembly line.

Hey Niko I think that the flooding effects the entire Nikon product line although I admit sort of indirectly because your right Thailand is the principle site for DX gear. However, a lot of raw materials for other items such as the magnesium alloy bodies are in Thailand and when one type of product is strained for materials it puts a strain on the rest of the other products as well. The flooding is so extensive that I'm sure it will delay opperations to the point that any immediate releases set for this month or next will be delayed again. Not a good year for Nikon's bottom line, but they are still recording decent profits. Hopefully next year things will run smoothly.

Thunderbolt cable 6' = $50
Cat5e/6 100'= $16

Like adamz said, the wireless possibilities that you can use easily with Ethernet connections are abundant. The only issue I really have with Thunderbolt is that nothing has or uses it except for a very few devices. I have the same feeling with HDMI connections with cameras, I never have hooked a camera up to a TV or needed to for any reason.

Getting Wifi-N in cameras (like Canon's add on) would be much more beneficial in my mind.

Not to mention that CAT5e cables (CAT6 is too stiff) can be much longer than a thunderbolt cable. The cable being too short was always one of the biggest complaints I've heard from tethered shooters stuck with USB2 cables.

well said

swapped a Canon F1 for a Pentax K1000 and 4 Pentax lenses, Vivitar 283, flash bracket and series I zoom. looking back, mybe it was not a good deal, but money was hard in those days and I thought the extra lenses was a good deal. K1000 ended being a fantastic learing tool.

Flop? Pro cameras that cost $7,000 are predominantly purchased by existing customers and it is a great update for Canon users. Will it pull Nikon users? It could if they already have Canon glass or enough money to justify it. There is most of a NFL and College FB Season left including College Basketball. But that is nothing new with every new release of a pro high-end body.

I'm with adamz - I like the idea of Cat5/6 connection and the small gps and wireless devices.

Comparing the Specs of metering, AF, and the like between two different manufactures is comparing apples to goats. Each company has their own unique design that can only be compared by performance, not the numbers of the specs. One can compare specs within the same manufacturer though, and it looks really good for Canon shooters.

two things I really like about the new Canon:
- etherneth port, how frustrating it is right now to work over the usb cable - not only the speed is questionable but also the size of the plug, and the length of the cable. IMHO, using cat-5/6 cable will give You a lot of new possibilities for remote control, not to mention cheap wireless control;
- new, small gps unit - mounted directly on camera body, no cables

@kyoshinikon - You may not see a new camera from both sony and nikon by the end of this year, but certainly You will see one before the olympics. that how it was in the past, and how it will be in the future.

I agree with Gareth. The 1DX is just catching up to the D3 series. Nothing earth shattering except that Canon has FINALLY gone full frame with their top tier cameras by combining both the 1D and 1Ds camera families.

Me too. I said earlier that if you were to compare the 2 Canon just barely overshot a camera that is 2 years old... The only real advantage is the Mpx and video and with canons track record Id be surprised if they fixed that too.

I see the Eos 1dx as possibly the biggest flop if nikon and sony bother to release something by the end of the year... Most of the canut pros I know are clamming for a 5Dmk3 but then again the few sports photographers I know either switched to nikon or shoot 50D's

i always assumed i was able to af at all apertures, on all focus points with my d700 and d300s. am i wrong? i have no idea what canon is on.

That's one of the areas I mentioned last night where I feel they compromised to make their specs sound more impressive. I searched around trying to find a similar breakdown of Nikon AF sensors, but from what I've found (or haven't found) every AF point on a Nikon sensor is f5.6. It feels to me that they packed in more AF points so it sounded like there was more, but in reality you can't always use them all. Sure anybody dropping that much on a camera body is probably going to have fast glass already, but they won't be able to use all those points all the time.

Same with the incredibly high continuous shooting rate. 12FPS at full resolution in RAW while able to continue autofocusing, okay that's nice. I question who would use 14FPS in mirror lock up and JPEG only though. I wonder too if including an electronic first curtain shutter was a compromise made to get that kind of rate. I understand that while this could enable this higher rate and reduce shutter lag, to incorporate this into a sensor would make for smaller photosites than you'd have otherwise and increase noise. Granted this still goes to ISO 200000, but maybe without the electronic first curtain shutter it could have reached 400000 or at least had less noise?

(Correct me if I'm wrong, I'm no expert just someone trying to learn all this stuff)

hmm, i just dont see it as a requirement, or desire of anybody.

if it is 36mp, i might just get a d700, as i just have no need for 24, let alone 36. i just wanted a d700 with a good movie mode really.

maybe got to wait for a 5dmkii :/, i cant afford a 1dx, just a hobbyist.
