same thing happen here. lens become crazy at 135mm and up. Scrubbing sound, jumping viewfinder. Happened while mounted to tripod. Less than 100 shots taken that night. Shooting a pagaent. Used mostly 1/250

I always understood , you need to turn VR off when shooting from a tripod, unles you've got a lens like the 300 2.8 VR or 200-400mm which has a "tripod Mode VR" ...

Anyways, Nikon says in the acompanieing manuals for both the 16-85 and 70-300 VR : "When the lens (or camera) is mounted on a tripod, set the vibration reduction ON/OFF switch to [OFF]." , ....

I had the same thing on two brand new 16-85 lenses. The first one was replaced straight away, the second one was repaired by Nikon who replaced the whole VR assembly within the lens. No problem since… :)

Definitely something to get looked at. In warranty or out, I'd would send that in to get repaired. Did anything happen to your lens before this happened?

Wow, something not right there! Almost sounds as if something has worked loose and is moving around? As Adamz says, at least it will be sorted under warranty, although I know what you mean about being without your equipment at a busy time. I suppose you could always use it with the VR turned off until the festive season has passed? Good luck in getting it sorted, It's a nice lens.

If it's not a problem with Your support (which I don't think it is), it only means You will have to use the remaining warranty.

Lens: Nikon 70-300mm VR f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED[it has 2 years Nikon India warranty.(Still 1 year left ]

VR just goes wild after 180mm and up and makes a terrible grinding noise . I will hate to give it to service center during festive season :|
