The battery pack for the D5100 has a magnesium frame? I don't think the D5100 has one.

Pretty sure Nikon doesn't even make a grip for the D5100, but I guess I should have specified. I was talking about the D7000 which has a grip available from Nikon and seemed to be the subject being discussed to me. I meant that I have the cheap D7000 $50 grip which is identical to the expensive Nikon in function other than the fact that it has a plastic frame instead of the magnesium frame (the $100 ones from Zeikos also appear to be identical to the other brands).

The battery pack for the D5100 has a magnesium frame? I don't think the D5100 has one.

I do have to say that one advantage to the battery grip is the option to use AA's. That can be a life saver if you're in a situation where your batteries are dead and don't have access to charged batteries.

I have one of the $50 grips - works great and I even use a Black Rapid strap with it with no issues. Difference between the cheap ones and a Nikon grip is that the cheap ones are all plastic while the Nikon has the magnesium frame.

Unless you like the feel of the grip, I see no need for it. A second battery easily fits in my pocket or camera bag pocket.

yup, the Zeikos ZE-NBGD7000

$100 on amazon.

But i've also seen ones from obscure brands on ebay for ~$50

i just bought a second battery so i have to choose.

EDIT: The $40-$50 grips are getting some very good reviews on Amazon

Couple people have compared them with the legit $250 side by side and claim little or no difference,
