If you are finished there is no point in waiting, in fact there is a great reason not to wait. If you're going to adjust post-competition release there is a reason to wait, but you're not "finished".

There are many more reasons to wait - fill the inventory levels to meet demand for one. The D800 will easily be one of the most sought after cameras.

There could be financial reasons (tax, profits in a particular year, inventory write downs, etc.)as well - they are in the business to make money after all.

My guess is after the D7000 stuck pixels and oil on the sensors along with this, it is a pro camera the quality control is probably very high.

Imagine if there were hot pixels or oil on the sensors - talk about a major PR problem!

I really believe that the D800 is finished and that they are waiting for canon to play the 5Dmk3 card...

If you remember the D40x had a ton of issues and Nikon was quick to release the D60 to replace it - about a year later. And that was essentially the same camera but with a different sensor.

Other way around. D60 = D40x 10.2MP CCD sensor with the newer processing engine (EXPEED package with Active D-lighting, etc).

But that's hardly unexpected. They've been tick-tocking the low-end cameras forever. The D3000 was quickly replaced by the D3100.

I'm starting to wonder that as well. In the more recent past they have released some higher end bodies after (couple of months) Sony has released theirs and usually almost a year before Canon's. With the rumored 5Dmk3 supposedly coming, maybe they want to leap frog them?

Honestly if rational sets in, I don't think Nikon "waits" to see what others release to 1-up them nor do I think any company has that logistical capability. Products have a multi-year development and I do not believe any company can turn on a dime like that with DSLRs. Maybe to add an art filter or something like that but not sensors or video programming. If you remember the D40x had a ton of issues and Nikon was quick to release the D60 to replace it - about a year later. And that was essentially the same camera but with a different sensor.

I heard they're waiting till they can make a professional model that I can afford...my apologies to everyone waiting...it's going to be a long one!

Seriously...are the delays still attributed to the earthquake, or are there other issues.

I am hoping that Nikon just wants to make enough of X,Y,Z so we all don't have to wait months to get a new body. One could hope!

Either that or they have spies in Canon and Sony and are not liking what they are seeing. ;)

I am waiting for the Sony and Nikon merger announcement... Oh wait...

No. That's not a genuine rumor - just me being full of mischief after a successful Monday morning.

I tend to agree with you TTJ... There must be some pretty badly spooked Nikon executives right now, unless they really DO have a earth shattering product under very heavy wraps...

Technically Nikon could be really lazy and unveil a D700 with a D3s sensor and better video capabilities and it would be extremely well received, especially if it still accepted the battery grip, although I doubt it now that the contacts have changed.

It would certainly anger the Canon users though- they may not see a 5D MkII replacement until next year. Hell, if it made them jump ship, why not?

It makes one wonder if there is something going on with the manufacturing of any new cameras - oil on sensors or much worse.

Sorry - been traveling. Anyone figure out what it was?

Nikon has to be feeling pressure from all sides - Where's the D4-D800-D400- mirror-less specs suck.

And so far the answer - I got a ruby red 3100 for you. It makes one wonder if there is something going on with the manufacturing of any new cameras - oil on sensors or much worse.

Yes, seems very strange for them to make ANY comment one way or the other. Maybe they feel that the rumors being banded around are potentially threatening to their future releases, or that based on rumor, people might not wait any longer for a new product? You can't however have it both ways, intentionally keep everyone in the dark as to your plans (very likely a sound business practice), AND expect those same people not to second guess what might be coming.

Hey, what do I know, just my tuppence worth.
