Back on the article - I watched a few of the videos and read a couple of the articles and it is basic overview - Kind of like a high school journalism how-too. It does hit all the good points though.

I never worked or did any photojournalism work but I am always amazed of photographers using wide angles and 50s and getting really close. Growing up and living in the central US/Midwest our personal bubbles are much, much bigger then the large cities on both coasts. Inner circle around strangers is really 6ft. Not exaggeration, if anyone got as close as they suggest, if you were lucky you would be arrested and if you were pushy, you would get thrown down to the ground by others thinking you were attacking someone. Doing street photography I will run-into this even if I'm across the street (40ft) away. People don't like see someone with a camera. That is just the culture in this area. Oddly enough, Iphone photography has become something no one even notices so I'm using that more.

I would find it interesting hearing how photographers work on getting that close in the parts of the US/world where it is similar.

It was a JOKE. Hence the little smiley face at the end of my sentence. I swear, for some of you the word "Apple" is like finger nails on a chalkboard :-(

The Old Guard took pictures of every grave at Arlington, not only the new burials. This was to document every grave due to the poor record keeping that was revealed last year (or earlier this year). They did this at night over the course of three or four months.

I know the Seals aren't Marines, hence the "comma" - Marines, Seal Team 6, etc. Just referring to the specific forces that have more often been mentioned in the news lately. Also aware that there're more Navy Seal teams than "6".

You may not have meant it to read like that, Rx4, but just wanted to make a point that the Seals are not Marines, they are Navy, attached to the Naval Special Warfare Command.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I recall reading about and utterly respect your knowledge of things military. I think I recall seeing "Old Guard" in the article but not sure if I actually saw "Marines." Seems all you hear about in the news today is about Marines, Seal Team 6, etc. I guess I plucked that one out of thin air. It also seems that CNN tends to be on top of every move Apple makes especially with regard to iPhones so I'm not surprised that only the iPhone was mentioned in the article. It certainly would have been more interesting if they'd mentioned Nikons.

Regards,
Rob (Rx)

It's an interesting read. Recently I read another article on CNN about how the Marines at Arlington National Cemetery come out every night and make photo records of all the new burials that went on that day. They use....you guessed it....iPhones. On average about 45 burials occur every day and therefore documenting these is critical for maintaining the whereabouts of those laid to rest there.

Hi,

The Old Guard at Arlington National Cemetery are the 3d US Infantry from Ft. Meyer which come from the US Army, not the Marine Corps.

A lot depends upon what 'documentation' means.

Documentation used to be done by the Signal Corps assigned to Ft. Meyer, too, with Nikons or Hasselblads. I doubt it has changed, but they could use what ever they want.

If the article referred to something else, such as grave placement and registration, that would be something else, but that also falls under what used to be called Mortuary Affairs. I don't know what it might be called now.

My best,

Mike

Thank you this is very inspiring, even though some of their advice is probably geared towards novice photographers (don't shoot into the sun). I wish there'd be more features like this, sort of BTS of documentary/photojournalism. It's all studio and excessive lighting plans these days...
