If the Afghan girl did not have green eyes, would that portrait have been so famous? Not knocking McCurry, as I think he does excellent work and it's one of my favorite pics, but you have to admit it would not have lasted the test of time and been that famous if it weren't for the color of her eyes.

As far as the best photographer working at Magnum, there were definitely better photographers in their past, and I can think of a few current ones I feel are better.

Yes I thought so too NSX he has had quite the career. All his famous 1980-1986 era stuff was shot on Kodachrome I believe so that would include his huge Afgan work and really famous desert, India and war coverage from that period. His famous portraits for National Geographic and other magazines were shot with chrome as well. No question the best photographer working at Magnum.

Wow, that really was excellent.

I wonder what percentage of those photos were from the Kodachrome era- I think I recognize some of the events in that short film.

If I am not mistaken, about halfway through, I think the photos of the flooded city are of Japan's 2011 flood right?

It was very honorable of Leica to have given the award to someone that doesn't shoot with Leica.

A good photograph is a good photograph.

I thought I would add this link to one of the greatest photographers of all time. He's not even a Leica shooter and they gave him the first Leica Hall of Fame Award! Most of his greatest shots were with a Nikon FM camera and prime lenses like a 35 and 50mm. He uses a D3 and Hasselblad now. I think he is one of the greats because I have never seen anyone capture portraits, landscapes, war, every genre of photography so well. He incorporates light, color, textures, tones, contrast better than anyone acrossed the entire medium of photography. I saw most of the images in this clip at his gallery showing in Seoul South Korea where I was also able to purchase his book of images as well. This clip is just as moving because if even plays the powerful song from the movie "Platoon" in the background! You owe it to yourself as a fellow photographer to check this out:
