@Johnny: The NEX 5 is really really great. My mate has one and I've toyed with it a bit. The only thing I don't like is that only has an electronic rear display. I feel more comfortable holding something to my eyes, and considering that the hands shake more away from the body than near it, I need the extra support.

I've looked very long and hard at 35mm~ sensor cameras and the only one I'd purchase (if money wasn't an option) is the Leica M9 for its size and its peacefully quiet nature. Naturally, I'd love an NEX with a 35mm sensor, but as we conjecture, it ain't gonna happen.

@whtchocla7e: Sony may have misread their market. The NEX 7 is really really looking like a great universal (very un-Sony) alternative for the Leica for its size, its possible resolution, its peaceful sound. Considering that with an adapter, you can get infinity focus on Leica lenses, it seems a very win-win camera.

Finally, considering that I am coming from a D200, no manner of contemporary camera will disappoint in ISO.

There will be no FF NEX. Count on it.
18mm registration distance and large sensor don't mix.
Sony won't release a FF NEX just to satisfy all five vintage glass collectors on the internet forums. It was intended to be a point-and-shoot camera and it's too late to reverse the design now.

This is coming from a NEX fan.

I too, doubt the existance of a nex-9: in theory Sony could do it, but the failure of mass adoption of the A850, seems to have told Sony that full-frame is not the way to go. Actually, I think a FF mirrorless would sell extremely well (it would have to compete against a $7000 M9, instead of a $2000 5d2), but that may be a hard distinction for Sony management to see.

Frankly, though, the N7 looks pretty good as it is. Sony has finally made a mirrorless that actually looks practical to control (how are you supposed to control a camera with 3 buttons?), and the EVF sounds pretty good. Really, I'm holding out for ultra-wide and/or fast wide primes. For reference, in my book, 24mm is not really wide, and 2.8 is definitely not fast for a prime. This is the real limit for using it with my F-mount lenses as well- everything is cropped by 1.4 times, so I no longer really have any wide lenses. My only compact option is my Voigtlander screwmount 12mm/5.6, which only becomes a slow 18mm equivalent- kind of a waste if you ask me. My wide zooms are also a little on the big side- there'd be no advantage to use a 11-16 or a 10-20.

This will pull me out of my work-induced hermitage. ;-)

I've got a D7000 and currently an nex-5, shigzeo. It is such a fun camera for when I don't want the attention or weight that comes with my D7000 (here the FX owners are chuckling). I'm also one that doesn't love Sony (for their leanings toward proprietary hardware), but I got the nex-5 as soon as it came out after seeing what it was and what it could do (and could take SD cards ;-). I think Nikon may be making a wrong move if they really are releasing a 17mm-diagonal sensor in their mirrorless line.

Consider the NEX-5N, too. I'm upgrading to that one, and I can't imagine what e-mount lens sony expects to take advantage of the 24 MP of the 7 (maybe the new zeiss?). In your case, though, it might make sense because you have some nice lenses you could put on with an adapter. I have the rayqual one and love it, but there are some really inexpensive options out there now, and it's not a hugely complicated part, really. Maybe you could get the zeiss 24 1.8 and the nex-5n kit. That combination is only $350 more than the nex-7 kit.

If you haven't used one, the nex cameras have an awesome interface for manual focus; I've been playing with the focus peaking that came with the most recent firmware update on the nex-5 and it's pretty handy (though not quite picky enough, IMHO). You can almost get the feeling you've got a view camera with a loupe sometimes. Happy hunting.

There are rumours of an nex-9, but it seems silly: 35mm equivalent sensor in such a small mount might be awkward or impossible. If it's not, I'll be happy.

My lenses: 28 2,8 AiS, Voight 58 1,4 AiS with CPU, 105 2,5 AiS, 180 2,8 ED AiS. Currently, the only lens that meters with any of Nikon's small, non crowd-attracting cameras is the Voigt.

According to big P, Nikon ain't interested in a mirror less, and to be honest, a 2,7 crop sensor isn't my cup of tea. I do a LOT of hiking and bicycling. I don't own a car. I take the train and busses. I want small, light, fast. I don't want big, heavy, AF lenses. I don't want a screw drive or complex AF systems.

I'd love a return to the FM2 size SLR that does everything a hiker needs. That won't happen, however, as currently, only Nikon's large cameras (D7000 and above) really work with all of Nikon's lenses.

So, a nice adapter from rayqual or someone and a NEX-x will do me fine. I love my Nikkors, but honestly, I'm over the large, bulky cameras, especially as the only option is small bodies with tiny, worthless viewfinders and poor metering.

Now, this isn't intended to attract trolls or anything. I've been a Nikon user for about 10 years, starting with a borrowed FM2 and lenses (that eventually became mine). But my collection of lenses are now going to go on something smaller, and fully capable, and it will be a Sony. Interesting turn as I've not liked Sony since abandoning minidisk for MP3 players in 2006.

Are there other Nikon users who would consider investing in a NEX to replace or enhance their SLR lens lineup for street photography or hiking or bicycling, or just to be quiet and non-disruptive when shooting?
