No DSLRs this week - I'm in a suck-y mood.

NikoDoby said:
The D3 and D300 were announced together on the same day so Nikon has done it before.

I still think the D400 and D4 will be released together - Maybe we will see a merger of the two (D700/D300) for around $2,100? That would shake the hell our of the industry. I still don't think so, but... Niko have you heard anything on this lately?

NikoDoby said:
COOLPIX cameras out sell DSLRs by a very large number. Something ridiculous like 20 to 1.

I thought it was even higher than that, more like 80 to 1.

very interesting stats,

after coolpix I would think that lenses out sell the DSLR, as we are constantly buying another lens.

Tcole 1983, you may be spot on with your wishes.

It is possible to evolve the DSLR systems toward a waterproof body and still keep the f-mount. It is just that nikon obviously isn't innovative anymore...

I dunno, the original Nikonos wasn't a F mount camera, but from what I understand the Nikonos wasn't a Nikon designed camera to begin with.

Also, when did 2 new FX cameras turn into a refresh of an existing camera?

remember,if all you want to do is share your photos on line, then you need a much smaller resolution than that provided by a DSLR, taking into consideration the resolution of monitors or smart phones/tablets.

Printing, cropping etc. requires a level of photography that phones cannot provide.

That said, I think that cell phone cameras will satisfy 75 to 80 percent of the needs of people who are not into photography, the other 25% will be happy with a point and shoot.

when you get to the point where you want to control :

depth of field
control of movement
control and manipulation of light

then we can safely say that camera phones will not suffice.

camera phones will have their use, and there are a lot of people who want to take pictures without the problems of learing about photography, and, just post the pictures to their social network,

and then we have the people who want to learn about the technical aspect of photography and what makes great photographs, therefore DSLRs will always be here.

marketing and demand drives production and as to wether Nikon should produce a camera phone , I cannot see that happening, but then I am not Nostradamus.

I think Nikon and canon have really missed the boat once again here with the coolpix line. There is a reason the iphone and other cellphone cameras are replacing the need for these more and more. Its the ability to upload and share your photos immediately. More and more I hear everyone saying...i dont need a compact camera I have my phone...and nikon puts a projector in one .....my my I dont know I mean i did pick up an x100 and love the leica style but these cameras are already outdated.

I don't think a DSLR Nikonos would sell very well. Why would you spend $5,000 on a D3/D4 and another $5000 or $6000 on a Nikonos? You can just rent a high-grade underwater housing for your D3 and lenses without spending more money on a new underwater body and underwater lenses. A DSLR Nikonos would probably be too heavy to use out of the water so you'd still need a D3/D4.

I think a waterproof Coolpix is a much better idea. I especially like the idea of swing control. The camera automatically senses movement and makes adjustments for portrait and landscape.

A bit disappointed at this week's announcements.

Maybe next week will be better?

And I'm confused why they didn't name the waterproof camera a "Nikonos".

Perhaps there will be a more rugged pro diving camera?

Lets not forget blue, green, pink and perhaps a range of stickers you can "customize" your coolpix with too?

Most kids will just say "So What, I want a iPad" and move on.

Thom Hogan put forward 3 possibilities for the 24th
1) Coolpix only
2) Coolpix plus mirrorless
3) DSLRs

Because Nikon doesn't announce DSLRs at the same time as Coolpix and because Nikon has already released a press release for Coolpix, it's reasonable to assume that no new DSLRs will be announced on Wednesday.
That being said, historically, DSLR announcements are usually preceded by a Coolpix announcement the week prior. Does an additional announcement next week sound possible? If all we're going to get this week are Coolpix, then why would Nikon prevent employees from taking a vacation the last two weeks of August?
It seems to reason that there is either an additional mirrorless announcement for Wednesday or another announcement coming up next week.
Admin, is this possible?
