What is your experience with photography? I am a little unclear, Parts of your post seems to suggest that you have had some experience or intend to be fairly serious with your photography. if thats the case then the D7000 is the choice. yes the D7000 is a bit heavier than the D5100 but its not that heavy .. it balances well with the 18-200. in fact its a touch on the light side for the 18-200. but with the other smaller lenses it perfect!

Agree with tcole that the 35mm 1.4 seems a bit too much for a first lens.. I would go with the 35 1.8 and/or 10-24. unless you are intending to go FX.

Congratulation on the new baby!

For the camera and well it sounds like you haven't used a SLR yet the D5100 is probably a good bet. They use the same sensor and unless you really need the options on the D7000 there isn't much need. Both lenses you mentioned are AF-S so the D7000 having a screw drive motor for older lenses won't be a big deal unless later you wanted to get them (older AF lenses).

Both lenses are good. I have the 18-200. It is good all around, but not really great at anything. I still use it 90% of the time because it is versatile. The 35 f1.4 is a great lens, but a big jump in for a first camera. I don't think you would be disappointed with it, but are you sure prime lenses will fit your need? Personally for the cost of the 35 f1.4, I would buy the 35 f1.8, 50 f1.8 and the 60 F2.8 micro...or something like that. There are too many choices if you are really going to spend $2000+ on lenses. Especially for you not having the past experience it is hard for me to suggest one way or the other.

Prime lenses are great, but after you use the 18-200 you will hate them.

Hi. I'm a mom of two girls, 4 years and a newborn and mostly want to take pictures of them and the family. I have been wanting to get into photography a long time, but finally want to take the jump. I am planning on getting the Nikon 35mm f/1.4G AF-S FX SWM Nikkor Lens and the Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S ED VR II Nikkor Telephoto Zoom Lens for either of the cameras I am planning on getting. I want a good camera, not too heavy but with optimal results. I would love to get the D7000 but I think it might be too heavy and bulky so that's why I'm considering the D5100. Thoughts on this? I want to make a decision today so I can take advantage of the offer Amazon is offering in their Nikon lenses, which ends today.
P.S. Thoughts on the lenses? I have spent several days reading about this and I think these two would be good choices. Thank you for your much needed input!
