A fake DSLR that actually works - not going to happen. The OPs question came from the camera being silver which is a rarer color for the camera.

How would the shutter activations prove its not a fake? That makes no sense. Zasid where have you heard of fake Nikon cameras? I've heard of fake Nikon batteries and fake memory cards but never heard of an entire DSLR being fake. In the past their have been fake film cameras like Leicas and Hasselblads but a DSLR would be more expensive and complex to fake. Maybe digital point and shoots but not a DSLR.

Here is my suggestion to check. Take a picture and move it to PC. Use an EXIF reader such as opanda to read the EXIF information. It should tell you the model of the camera and maybe the lens too. I think it's unlikely for people to hack that since they probably have to hack the chips inside the camera. You can also find out the number of shutter releases.

Serial Numbers are one of the best ways. Various sites have the serials listed for each body, lens and accessory.

Besides the obvious, read the reviews of the seller and ask for actual photos BEFORE you buy it.

Key things to beware of on Ebay:

-Seller has multiple listings of the same item with the same photos.
-Selling multiple items in different currencies
-Selling multiple items from different countries
-Asking you to contact them first or trying to sell it outside ebay (#1 listing violation and most common scam) Do not do this.
-New seller with zero reviews
-Does not respond to e-mails
-Uses only stock images
-From Africa (Sorry anyone from there - way too many scams come from here.)
-Shipping that takes more than 2 weeks to anywhere in the world.

its like a girl with three boobs, it is so different, everyone would want to play with it.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick response. The only differnce I can spot as a lame user :) is that the body is silver and this one on the wesbsite is black apart from that every thing is same whichi is quite a relief, I believe it just a different colour as a matter of choice. Is there a way or place where I can check it by putting in the serial number? I couldn't find such option at Nikon's website.

I really don't think that you need to have any worries about this. The D50 is quite an old camera (6 years) and if any fakes were made, then I really doubt that those are still alive. I did read about a case where a D50 was equipped with crude stickers and passed off as a D90 but it is hard to believe that anyone would bother to fake a D50. Everything else my quick search revealed were similar questions on forums (with no proof) and fake photoshopped images of supposed unreleased camera models.

If you want to be really sure, check out the specs and product photos at http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond50/

When buying on eBay make sure the seller has an immaculate rating and has been indeed selling cameras not buttons and batteries.

Hi,

I am first time user of for DSLR and bought my first Nikon D50 through Ebay. but after reading through google afterwords I was shocked to know there are many fake camera out there. Is there any way I can check or verify that my Nikon D50 camera (body/lens) is fake. The make of the camera says its made in Thailand ,I also bougt a lens AF NIKON 18-135mm which I won in the auction along with this.

I will be very thankful if someone can point me to the right direction on how to verify that my camera is fake or real.
