The GP1 is way over priced, as suggested. It was release with the D90 if I recall correctly and is thus three years old. In other words it doesn't even have a modern GPS receiver. One solution if you must geo-tag stuff is to take a photo with your cell phone (if it has a GPS) and use the info from that photo.

It is too over priced. It is true that GPS devices have evolved, specially in three fields: a) silicon size (which leads to cost reduction, less power consumption as well),
b) better sensibility,
c) more popular (also leads to cost reduction).
Today, some point-and-shot cameras already have a GPS chip, and their price is far below the price of a D7000, so why not add this capabilities to a good DLSR camera?

I agree. Although I have heard that the GP1-GPS is much more sensitive and better than many $5 ones. Nikon always wants to do it right - good for use, bad for pocket book.

I have been disappointed after using Sony's cameras to see what they have added that Nikon can/should do. The IQ is good, new tech is always cutting edge, ergonomics is ok and the lenses are good as well. They are trying to set Nikon into the 3rd spot on DSLRs and they are making a good run at it. They will never knock off Nikon's pro bodies but I think they can pick up much ground in the consumer market.

I still would never buy one but I can see many who would.

I guess I'll stick out here as well, Sony does make some great cameras and has come up with some great features. I too would like geo-taging built in and I am learning with my X100 an ovf can be done right. Sony has always had more money to throw at it's cameras and it's innovation seems to start at the bottom-up (compact to slr) rather than the usual top-down. Interesting to hear about the FPS, It would be nice to see Nikon upgrade their buffers.

I have played with some friends Sony's and they are nice cameras with a different set of features that all the others may never have which may help them find their niche in the market. I'll just never get over that plastic odd shutter sound. :)

I see that we are on the same boat :)
About the GPS capabilities, a GPS chip (+ all the required hardware) does cost is under 5 dollars, therefore it could not change the camera price dramatically if added. A user can always disable it if not wanted...
.. I also think that there is no reason to ask for 200$ for the GP1-GPS unit, when its hardware may costs less than 5$ (4000% of margin?)

Almost all of these electric viewfinders have a significant amount of lag, they have poor color representation and tend to be very low resolution, if it does happen I hope it sticks to the consumer models.

I don't know, I don't really care for geotagging. I also don't need 10 fps. I'm still at 2.5 fps. :D

In fact, the D7000 would probably give me everything I'd ever need, perhaps with the exception that it's heavier and bigger than I want.

The screw mount I don't really need anymore actually, since all my lenses are AF-S and Nikon is phasing out AF lenses with AF-S ones.

The only Sony product I'd ever want is the PS3 and a big TV, and I have both already. :D

Sony's lens selection I don't really care for either.

But the mirrorless thing I'm sure Nikon is looking into. It'd be stupid for them to not make a mirrorless camera, but I think there's a place for optical viewfinders still, especially if they implement it like Fuji.

I think there is a place for cameras with a multitude of features.. however most of the "real photographers" I know seem to remember almost every detail of a photo they shot even years later.. details like where they were what shutter speed and fstop.. how the light was .. I guess they crafted their works and put a bit of them self into the image.

But for holiday snaps I would like geo tagging as some places just get muddled up in my mind during the rushing around of a "holiday" !! (lol)

GP1-GPS unit by Nikon

not everyone wants one, so, if you want one, just buy it and put it on your D7000.

I used a friends D700 with one of these attached and it worked great.

i like the fact that it is optional, just another gadget that will push the price of the camera up, and not everyone will want it.

would prefer to put the money in to a 85mm f1.4

as for evil, that has been talked about elswhere

I personally hate it when companies add too many features to their products. I want a camera company to focus on image quality first, then features second.

Hello,

I have a D7000 and I'm happy with it, and I do not plan to change it.
A colleague at work has the Sony SLT A55, therefore during a fun day at work we had, I could compare both cameras.

I know that this is not a fair side-to-side comparison, due to the fact that one camera(D7000) is almost twice the price from the second one(SLT-A55)

Although I prefer an optical viewfinder, the viewfinder on the Sony was not bad at all, it is an electronic viewfinder, that also displays additional info like histogram on the viewfinder, that can help you (if you want) to nail the exposure as you want. Also, we took a series of photos from some fun water activity, and I felt that my Nikon is much slower (I shot in RAW, up to 6fps till my buffer filled up, while the Sony was working at 10fps for a larger time).

The idea of The Single Lens Translucent (SLT) camera is not bad, I guess that this allows the 10fps as well.

Also geotagging is builtin on the Sony, a feature I miss on my D7000.

It is true that the Nikon feels better in my hand, and I do not feel the plastic as the Sony one, and also It seems that the Nikon may last longer due to its robustness (Although the D7000 is not a pro camera)

About features the cameras provide, most of them are the same, with some additional stuff provided on the Nikon, that allows you to customize the camera to your habits, like more WB settings, you can go up to 1/8000 on the Nikon, exposure compensation or bracketing (which i use) is more flexible on the Nikon..

I wish Nikon could also add some features on their cameras like geotagging.

Any comment?
