Generally its not worth switching systems.. Too bad you already sold some gear before you asked.. :-( If I were you, since you do not seem to know exactly why you are switching I would stay with canon. Wait till you know exactly what the new gear will do for you before deciding to leap. However, like the others said.. Nikon is the best for photography. and canon has the edge for video though nikon is catching up. Also the Nikon Flash system aka the CLS is a huge plus for nikon users. I know people who switched system to nikon Just for the CLS! But if you dont use strobes often Its pointless.. . The point is know what you want from the system. Then match it against the features of your current system and compare it with teh features of the system you intend to switch to.

Good luck with your decision.

funny i find this post. three nights ago i had a dream i switched from Nikon to canon. the only thing i liked about canon was the feel in my hand. Then, for what felt like days, i knew only agony ans sadness. Lucky for me, i woke up and i saw my Nikon gear. I don't know what this dream/nightmare reveals about my subconscious feelings on Nikon, but i would go with the brand that would get you upset, if you no longer had it.(yay run on's) i do get the feeling this poster is a troll, because even if he left crappy canon, he didn't have any attachment to his current stuff.

What you hear is correct. If you want the latest and best, buy the D3x, then trade it in when when if the D4 comes out

PS if you cannot afford the a D3 the D700 is a fantastic camera and will remaine a fantastic camera even when the D800 comes out

I heard many pros with 5D mark 2 and higher models are switching to D700/D3s for the better autofocus, iso, overall photo quality, ergonomic, reliability and better glass... just to add to your puzzle. They are not even waiting for the replacement. I have not read about the opposite, Nikoner switching to Canon. Do some google, you will see.

So many have complained about the recurrent autofocus problems of the 5D mark 2 and the clumsy ergonomic.

Given that you already have Canon glass, I suggest you stay with Canon, and once you really got burned with it, you can always switch to Nikon later.

Okay if it is not worth switching I will upgrade to Canon 7d or 5d mark 2
And keep my remaining canon gears.

Thanks for all your input....the only reason I was thinking to switch was that I thought nikon is way better than canon but if they are equally good then I will stay with canon.

Lol. Wow. If you were serious, you would already know that megapixles don't mean anything and that the Nikon D700 destroys the Canon 5D MkII in still photography as does the much cheaper Nikon D7000. The 5D Mk II has noise in shadows, even @ ISO-200, not to mention terrible banding over Iso-2000, which pretty makes those images unusable. I would not say making the switch to Nikon is not worth it, because it is.......IF you plan on staying with Nikon. Ping-ponging back and forth is unreasonable and deffinatly not worth the trouble. Nikon has better AF, metering, better ISO noise handling(by far), better dynamic range and better glass. If you don't appreciate those things, then stick with Canon. If you prefer class-leading still images, welcome to the dark side.

BTW, the Canon 7D is a horrible still camera. Very low quality high iso performance and terrible dynamic range.

You do know that the 5Dmk3 is coming soon don't you? I'm guessing you'll be back to ask if you should sell your new 7D and switch to the Nikon D800 or just buy a 5DMk3.

I question the switch too. You had just purchased a 60D, which is a pretty recent camera.

Why would you want to switch so readily if you had just bought such a new camera? Unless money is no object, that's still a really pricy thing to do.

Not sure if you know what you're trying to do with your gear.

I agree completely with jerl- did you completely exhausted all Canon options before you switched?

If not, you might be ping ponging between both brands for some time.

Everyone pretty much covered all the lenses- all of the main Canon lenses and bodies have Nikon counterparts, so whatever you used to have, you can buy up again.

My question though, completely out of curiosity, is bother switching at all? After all, it costs money and time to sell one system and buy another up, so why do it? I ask also because I'm concerned that if there's any concerns you had with your old system that they may also show up with your new system if you're not careful.

5d is better in video but it sucks on stills when You compare it to d700, pixels are not all what counts, there are other factors also, such as AF, higher iso

as for the lenses, in Your case I'll go for primes. if u however need zoom than N16-35/4 and N24-120/4 should do the job for You - both FF lenses

@d90, don't expect a direct upgrade, get either d5100 (video) or d7000 (stills)

Yes, It make sense, if I a switching I should buy latest and gratest rather than spending my money on old technology. I think most of people agree with this. I am not a professional photographer, it is my hobby and love to shoot landscape, people and interesting objects. The reason I want to switch to Nikon is I heard all good about Nikon that it is better technology like metering system, focusing system and has better glass etc. I hope I answer all your questions.

Now back to d700 vs 5d mark 2. The reason I believe 5d is better cause it is new technology, more mega pixels, better LCD, better video etc etc

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Dangerous thing to say on a Nikon forum that the 5d is better than a D700. Have you tried both? You still have not said why you are switching? It almost sounds like you just want to follow the newest (latest and greatest).

What kind of photography do you want to do? Why are you leaving Canon for Nikon?

I really appreciate all the replies but the last two by smarterchild and Pierre are the one I found more helpful. I like d700 but as both of you mentioned that an update is almost due. I like the option of getting D7000 with 70-200 and a wide angle like 24-70 or even wider. But if I stay with canon I found 5d mark is better that d700 as it is much better camera than d700. But on the other hand if I go with crop sensor than d 7000 is a better option than 60d or 7d, because d7000 is newest technology. Also I heard good comments about d90 when is the update to d90 is coming?

once again thanks to all of your reply which will be very helpful to make me a decision.

I find that I can achieve comparable results with the 70-200mm F2.8 VRII mounted on Kenko tubes than with the 105 mm if you don’t mind the cumbersomeness and tripod shooting. The DOF is not as narrow with the 70-200 setup. If you want to get really close, than Kenko + 105mm.

With a D700 I think the 24-70 F2.8 is a must, closely followed by the 70-200 F2.8 VRII.

As for the D800 release, it was supposed to be imminent for more than a year and a half already and only god knows when this will happen. Many predict a D4 to happen somewhere in early 2012 and a D800 only long after that. If you want a good FF camera now, go for the D700 or even the D3s if you have the cash, otherwise the D7000 would be a good buy especially with good glass.

The D800 is expected to be released during the time of august or September. Rumors say its not been delayed. The D700 is great but if you can wait till then that would be better

You honestly cannot get any better lenses then the
14-24 2.8
24-70 2.8
70-200 VRII 2.8

Primes are another story. 24,35,85 are awesome new primes. As tcole1983 said the 105 macro is a great lens as well. the 50 1.4 is a okay lens but is'nt up to par with the other lenses i've listed above

Kind of hard to say...obviously switching brands is expensive, but it looks like you have most of your stuff sold already. If you come to a Nikon forum expect us to all recommend Nikon ;)

From what I see you had there are Nikon com parables to most of your lenses. Nikon only has a few F4 lenses though so you would have to get something else in those ranges. I think Nikons 70-200 F2.8 is the best out there. The Nikon 105 F2.8 macro is an awesome lens and probably one of the best. There is the Nikon 24-120 F4.

I hope you have the money though...this will all be a pretty penny.

I would go in the wideangle range with the 16-35mm f4VR, I own two fixed lenses, a 14mm f2.8 and a 17mm f3.5 and they work great on my d700. Also I'd go with the 105mmVR macro or the Sigma 150mm f2.8 for the macro, they are both wonderful.

Would be helpful if you could state your needs yes.
However, if you were planning to upgrade to 5d Mark II, I'd probably go with a Nikon D700.
Additionally, to replace your lenses:
a) Nikon 24-120 f4
b) Nikkor AF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 G DX (can only be used on non-full frame bodies), or Nikkor AF-S 17-35mm F/2.8 D or Nikkor AF-D 18-35mm F3.5-4.5
c) I don't really know macro...
d) Nikon 70-200 f2.8 :)

If you're switching to full frame you need to take the crop factor into account though: all your lenses will only retain 2/3 of their focal length, so they'll all be wider.

You're looking at quite an investment though...

Finally: what made you want to switch?
