Hi, I agree with willis spring for the D700 if you shot with film before. You will love the nice viewfinder, nice controls and wide angles you can get. Although the 10-24 DX lens is nice, I have never enjoyed the crop DX factor with Nikon. Especially for primes 35 to a 52 for example. That might be just me though a lot of people swear by DX only. I will be getting a D700 for Christmas I'm treating myself. The deal is : Trade in my D300 for $1200 and I have to pay $1500 cash. I get a brand new D700 and a used D40x back in return. I have the glass already to go.

I'm hoping for an "entry level" FX camera from Nikon soon. Hopefully 2010 will be a good year for FX users!

The best way to get back at it is to take the first step and buy what you thing you need. Obviously the D40X wasn't the box for you?? I have been a Nikon fan for many years, and I have always bought the Pro Nikon bodies. I like the heft and feel of them. Beleive me I understand the "obsolesce" factor, "Been There, Done That" Nothing worse they registering your nice new camera and discovering an announcement from Nikon on the Nikon site for the beast that one upped you nice new toy!!

A year ago last November I oppted for the D700, I din't like the smaller body, it didn't fit my hand, and the lack of the verticle release, so I added an MB D10, and it was Love :-D And all that old full frame galss I kept from my film days now have a new home.. This summer I popped for another D700/MB D10 set-up and I couldn't be happier..

I'm sure the D 90 or the "S" version if there is one would do a fine job, if you are looking to venture into a FX body eventually I would avoid buying too many DX lenses..

I still have all my DX gear D2x's and a bunch of DX lenses, they still see use. I like the DX systems built in 1.5 teleconverted :-D

You won't be sorry, the D90 is the most versatile camera in Nikon's lineup. Do yourself a favor and stop reading gearhead sites like this one for a year so you don't get camera envy.

Connect, you're right. You know that as soon as you buy a camera, the new model will come out. In fact, hurry up and buy a camera already, because we're all waiting for the new models!

connect - for sure there's gonna be no new camera from the D90 segment, as D90 has been out only couple months ago, if there's going to be something new on the market - than it can be either (or both) d40/d60 replacement and/or D300 replacement. I wouldn't expect something like D700x/D800 (FX - 24Mpx), but of course I might be wrong.

DX is not going away any time soon.

I think that all depends on the money You have. A solid kit for FX gonna cost You around 5.5k (including camera and two lenses, there's no really a sens of buying a 2.5k camera and add a cheap lens to it, coz u will benefit more with cheaper camera and better lens), the other drawback is the fact that this kit gonna be heavy, and only two things You will get better: low light performance and wider angels.
If I were You I'll go for D90 with some better than the standard kit lenses, like 70-300 vr, as for sure there's not gonna be any new Nikon camera in this segment by 2010 (18-24 months cycle).

The D90 is a great camera and probably all you need. The big advantage for FX is the low light capability. If your coming from film, your in for a treat either way. The D90 does low light better than film ever could. The D700 even more so.

If you can afford the D700, get it. You won't see FX under $1500 anytime soon. In fact, its getting more expensive, not less.

I'd buy the D90 & some FX primes. Don't waste your time with the DX kit zooms (although they are great cheap lenses). Then start saving for some fast zoom glass... remember, you want FX for the low light capability, so why waste it on a slow zoom. Once you have that out of the way then make the jump to FX. By then, we'll have something that makes the D700 seem crude.

Also, the ergonomics on the D90 are excellent. best button layout on a consumer zoom in my opinion.

I’m interested in getting back in to photography, more so digital. While not a pro, I’m an amateur who knows what he’s doing. My investment in Nikon glass is not much, but would prefer Nikon just because it all I’ve ever used (not so much a reason, just brand loyal I guess). I’ve shot with the D40x and found it too small for my hands and annoying to dig through menus to change simple settings. The D90 is what I am currently leaning towards. An FX sensor would be nice, but I can deal with 1) the 1.5x mag and 2) the appending doom of DX (hopefully at least 2 years out).

So, why this post on a rumors blog?
1) What are thoughts on something coming out soon with respect to an affordable ( <=1k ) FX Nikon.
2) What are thoughts on something coming out to be the D90 successor?

Current plan is to buy D90 and sell it come December ’09 (good time/market for used cameras). Sell with the hopes of something better / more affordable / FX to be released.
