I get this issue sometimes, not necessarily with firefox but I simply won't be able to log in by any means, even forcing a refresh or restarting the browser won't let me online.

I too have noticed when I shoot moon shots in more urban areas I get this usually. We shoot moon shots with Nikon DSLR both with Nikkor lens and a Celestron telescope with a Nikon adapter. We do not get this in areas like the Adirondack Mountains as the skies are much less influenced by air pollutants like dust or smog. When I have had trouble in California I used RAW to fix the problem but almost always uses JPEG. I have though not added a thing to TaoTeJared's posts. One thought though that he didn't mention is that my own eyes have more of a halo in viewing which is a sign of aging eyes. I am 66, and never had that happen until about 64. Which I have been assured as proof that my eyesight is somewhat different from the right versus the left eye. When I put a Nikon telephoto up to get ready for a photo that defect has been corrected. I hope that has not happened yet to any of you!

Looks good. If you darken your sky it would blend in as well. I shoot Jpeg-s 90% of the time, but Raw for those types of images where the dynamic range is very wide.

>>I hope you don't think D-lighting was the only thing going on.<<

If you were commenting to me, no I wasn't thinking anything like that.

>>If one wants to eliminate the halo you can...<<

Depending on your exposure, you can extract a fair amount of data out of one raw file. Here's the JPEG file the D5100 made next to the RAW extracted data:
http://tinyurl.com/3hhplqh
As I mentioned earlier, that was 1/2 sec @ F8. Of course it requires fiddling around with the RAW data as opposed to the instant file the camera makes, but sometimes it's worth it.

I hope you don't think D-lighting was the only thing going on. The shot I took above had D-lighting off and in RAW.

If one wants to eliminate the halo you can; 1) Check pollution and barometric levels to ensure the clearest day possible or 2) Take two shots, one exposed for the moon and one for the scene. I always do #2. Not much else you can do about it unless shooting in mid-winter in the middle of nowhere.

>>Active D Lighting is a very nice inclusion. You just need to know when to turn it off :-)<<

Unfortunately you can wind up losing a lot of good shots in the learning phase if you don't save a RAW backup! How many people who buy D5100/D3100s will do that? Some of us are an exception of course.

Thinking about that shot, I shoulda dug out my 300mm F4.5 Nikkor for it. Oh well, next month, assuming good weather.

>>you probably had Active Dlighting on .. if you have the Raw file the halo should not be there.<<

Yep, that's it. Fortunately I shoot RAW+JPEG so I have backup. Nasty side-effect of Active-D. Think I'll shut it off altogether, or at least set it to minimum.

>>Yes - atmospheric conditions. Without being technical you are seeing the light reflected off the moon onto the atmosphere of the earth.<<

Yes, and apparently Active-D did a mambo on it. Nasty.

Like all the other settings, you need to know what Active D does and when best to use it. I usually have mine set on Maximum and turn it off when I need to or use the RAW/NEF. Active D Lighting is a very nice inclusion. You just need to know when to turn it off :-)

Depending on the day as well as the exposure when shooting the moon I get the halo effect. Generally I shoot the moon (only the moon) at 1/250 or higher to get detail and to stop movement. When doing that, everything else is black and I do not get a halo or barley do that looks good. The longer exposure is, the more light that hits the atmosphere and thus more halo. Active D does exaggerates this to a degree and I see the same on street lights and like in night shots with strong light sources. For me, anything over 1/10s and the AD kicks in too much for my taste. I have Active-D set to low or off.

Yesterday (15/jun/2011) we had a great lunar eclipse here that started almost two hours after moonrise.

At moonrise the moon was very reddish due to the ash cloud from the Eritrean volcano that erupted earlier this week in Africa, that covered part of this region... but later on, the eclipse was great..

I was shooting the moonrise tonight and when I got home I noticed a strange effect around the moon. Have a look at this:
http://tinyurl.com/3u5mxp9
Has anyone had a similar effect on images with their D5100? That was shot with the 55-200VR at 150mm, F2 @ 1/2 sec., ISO 400.

Curious.
